2.2SE Exhuast Note

Brought a Z4 Friday last week and so far I love it! One thing I would like to improve however is the exhaust note. I'm not after way more noise, a bit more is fine I would just like to improve the sound as opposed to making more of it. I have looked at quad exhaust systems and backboxes and other such things, what would you guys recommend to give the Z4 a nicer sound? If it can be on a budget that would also be great

Thanks Very much Scott

Maybe you could simply start by changing the air filter to a sports filter. Quite cheap and adds a nice grawl to the intake. Won't change the exhaust noise, but it will sound more agressive. And adding a sound generator would change the noise in the cabin too, without making the car louder than it is. Loads of movies on Youtube if you want to know how it sounds with a sound generator.

When i had a 2.2 i added the sound generator. Far cheaper than an exhaust and sounds pretty good too.

Get phoning scrap yards to see if they have 3.0's in - someone on here picked one up for £20 i believe. Dealer prices are around £100 IIRC.

The sound generator is a pipe that comes off the air intake and feeds into the bulk head of the 3.0l cars. It can be retro fitted to your car to improve induction noise.

You could also try doing a bypass pipe mod to the back box. You can use the search function on the e85-e86 section on hear to find out more.

Okay, after some digging I understand the sound generator but cannot for the life of me source one other than direct from BMW :(

It's relatively simple 2 x 1" pipes are attached to one each of the exhaust ( not sure if there is 2 for the 4 cylinder engine) it just releases a little noise as some gasses dot travel through the back box. So when I did mine I got more snap crackle and pop and no drone. Well a little.

Trouble is the fitting you will need to remove the back box rill a few holes then weld it ack up. If you close to Oxford I can help out for a bee or 2.

The 2.2 is six cylinder my friend :) But I would be very very interested, who sells the bypass pipes? Just been reading on the thread on here about them :)

Sorry thought you had a 2.0l my mistake.

There was a group buy on hear before. I made my own that kind of thing is what I do for a living.

Having looked at your thread I bow before your engineering prowess, I am also an engineer working more on the paper and desk side of things with Rolls-Royce :) How much for the two bypass pipes and how much would you want for fitting?

After ringing at least 15 scrapyards and bmw breakers with no luck (half of them didn't even know what a sound generator was  )I started looking for people breaking bmw z4 3.0's found a guy selling an engine and assumed he might have the other bits rang him and he was very helpful, 35 posted :) I am also buying his wind deflector and behind seat subs :)
