2.2i DOORS TINNY/CHEAP SOUNDING

Hi, I've just bought a 2004 2.2i and I'm surprised at the sound that the doors make when they shut. They really sound cheap and tinny, like a cheaper car would sound. I've owned a few BMW's and none of their doors felt this cheap. Do they all do this ? or is there a piece of trim, rubber bump stop that could be missing. I'd be interested in others opinions.

Cheers

They all sound like that I'm afraid, especially the earlier Roadsters. Your options are to apply some self-adhesive sound deadening material to the inner door skin or live with it.

Yep,when we got our Z4 in March thats the one thing that really got on my nerves, moved from a Z3 which had very solid doors,so it took some getting use to,but now 8 months, and almost 10,000 SMILES :driving: later i can forgive the tinny doors

It is a fairly simple job to add sound deadening. Just need door cards and membrane off. Think most live with it though. There are a few threads on here somewhere.....

I noticed this too when I was first looking at getting an Alpina Roadster S I tried out some 2.0 Z4s out of curiosity and the doors were quite tinny sounding. The Alpina feels far more solid and they are based on pre-facelift Z4s so I am assuming they put in extra sound deadening materials or the extra leather in the door cards makes a difference.

I'm happy to live with it for now......

Shame though, it does let it down a bit. But you dont buy a zed to have a nice sound when the door closes :driving:

I too have an early 2.2 and the sound of the doors used to really wind me up.

I have got used to it over the years and now I accept it and it doesn't really bother me.

Not enough to want to take the doors apart anyway.

Yes ... the first time you hear it it's quite a shock
I fooled around with a couple of Zs before I bought mine, and they all did it.

Just think of it as Z4 "character." 8)

Nope. Ours are tinny! As were all the others we test drove. Glyn; Andy must have done something to yours during his tenure! I'm not touching those membranes unless I really have to  so I'll live with it.

I actually find the doors on my facelift very heavy and have a reassuring thud when closing.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I'm afraid I can't live with it, I work in the car industry at the design end and it's the sort of thing that means a poor job in my eyes, so I'll be investing in some Dyna mat soon. I'll see if I can pick some up at the Classic Car Show next weekend.

Cheers

Wixer; some pics of the process and comments on the result would be much appreciated

My 03 2.5 also has a horrible clang when the door is closed. I thought I'd get used to it but I'm just not...

Dynamat is exactly what I used now I see the brand name posted. Door cards off membrane off and cut into manageable strips and worked around onstacles until I could completely coat the inner skin of the door. Added a few more bits on anything else in the door that sounded tinny and even bits on the inside of the bootlid, boot floor, etc.

Real difference to the quality 'thud' as opposed to clang' when the doors shut, although they still sound tinny compared to my former X5 and current Jag.

Yep - same tinny sound here on 2003 2.5. Only picked it up recently kind of pleased to hear that it is a "feature" rather than a problem. Be nice to get a solid thunk though.

I was thinking that it might be at least partially a roadster issue rather than solely a Z4 issue.
With the soft top there's less "air cushion" effect to produce a classy "whump" type closure.

Just a wild guess though ... and I'm sure there are ways around it, but maybe the solution would boost the price of the car too much to make it worthwhile.
