2.2 getting hot

I have had the ZED for a month now with no issues, but I changed to oil recently and all levels are correct and she is running ok.
But just yesterday on my way home from work i noticed a faint burning smell inside the car.
When i got home i lifted the bonnet and she was roaring hot especially around the drivers side by the heat cover.
My home journey is only a 15 min one but i have a few stops and starts in traffic on the way.
Is this normal or anything to be worried about.

The engines get hot - but the burning smell needs investigation if it continues, it could be some spilt oil after the change.

Are the fans working? If not check fusses and see if they do.
or it could be your thermostat. Check your coolant levels BMWs of this age do tend to have week cooling systems.

is there a way of checking the fan the coolant levels are ok

Switch AC on to max whilst parked, fans should come on, if not let us know, there is a common failure that takes 5 mins to rectify!

Without being rude. If you’re asking that take it to a garage so you know for sure buddy

You don’t want it getting to hot. It will do serious damage. Get it looked at by a good local or BMW indy.

But if you want to have a go. Or just so you know and why not learn.
The coolant bottle filler/header tank is to right of the slam panel under the bonnet at the front as you look at the car. It is a twist off cap (ONLY OPEN THIS WHEN THE SYSTEM IS COLD!!) So dont do it after driving it. If you undo it when it’s hot you will have steam and boiling water potential shooting in your face!!

The fans should kick in if your traffic. Or after a long is drive or if it’s hot. After a drive and you switch the car off can you hear a whirring nose or any noise from the front of the car? If yes the fans are working.

Have you noticed any water under your car?

What did your temp gauge say ? If your temp was normal and coolant level normal then I wouldn't worry. I don't know if you've owned a BMW 6 cylinder engined car before (I've had 3) but it is a big, hot, aluminium lump ! Those alloy heatshields on the exhaust side are there for a reason...it gets hot. As for the burning oil smell then you may have dripped some when doing your oil change or more likely the cam cover gasket has failed. When the engine is cool run your fingers around the gasket and check for weeping oil, usually on exhaust side and rear corner. Again it's nothing to worry about as it's a cheap and easy fix.
