2.2 auto

Hi Guys. New to this site but have been running a Z3 for two years as a weekend car and now thinking of upgrading to a Z4 which my wife will use to replace her Mini Cooper and I will use when allowed!
Advice please on the desirability of a 2.2 auto. We have been looking at some 2.0 and 2.5 manual which is our first choice but the steptronic box looks a good bet. I am looking at a 2.2 with an auto box but as yet don't know if it is steptronic or not. I assume this was an option on a standard auto set up.

BMW dealer told us the 2.0 or 2.5 was better in manual but 2.2 better in auto. Anyone agree?
Thanks for the help.

PS anyone selling a 54 or 55 plate 20-30k car in Blue?

Hi & Welcome

I have a 3.0 auto which is steptronic I assume the 2.2 is the same,

No idea im afraid about what the bmw dealer said, but it sounds like the usual bull s**** they come out with :D

I actually have a '04 2.2 Auto which i bought around 6 months ago from a dealer with only 11k on the clock.

The engine is good and the auto box is very smooth.
I only drive around 4000miles a year so didnt see the benefit of the larger outlay for a 2.5 or 3.0.

However, having owned a couple of BMW 2.5 3 Series before I do feel that the 2.2 lacks the power of this engine - not to mention the 2.5 sounds a lot better also.

I would go for the 2.5 (or more likely the 3.0) if I were making my purchase again.

Dont let me put you off though as the 2.2 is a great car also and is certainly quick enough for 99% of your day to day driving

I think you have to be clear in what you want from it. Speed, performance, ease of drive, economy, etc.
The 2.2 was a discontinued engine early in it's life leaving the 2.0 as the 4 cyl and 2.5 and 3.0 as the 6cyl.

The auto is a steptronic and a great box.

My concern would be that the power of the 2.2 is relatively low when used with an auto and you'd be best therefore to go manual on smaller engines or if you want the auto a bigger engine. Perhaps that what the dealer was trying to say, but they spout such rubbish to get a sale.

I drive the 3.0 Steptronic and it's more than ample and love it

I had a quick look on the BMW used section and there's only one 2.2 auto for sale nationally. http://www.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/auc/car_details/0,,1260_159980106__,00.html?currentCh=WBABT12070LR00960

What struck me about it is that even though it had a longish list of extras, most of these would be standard on a 3.0. There'll be 2.5's or 3.0's available for similar money I'd have thought, and more to choose from.

Auto box is the best of all worlds for me, but you will find otherdsiscussions on here about that.

Good luck with that, hope you find something and enjoy it as much as I do.

Feedback much appreciated. We are more mature drivers so not so much interested in raw power. Drove a 2.5 auto and a 2.5 manual today. The auto car was a real dog - not prepared at all, filthy and four warning lights on! What a way to try and sell a car. It was a car mart type place though. The box and engine combination was great though. Then drove manual car from another smaller independant which was a really nice drive. Still have the 2.2 auto to see so will compare all four as we have already driven two 2.0 manual inc a new one with 7k off list!
3.0 is a bit of beast for us now I think.

Given your claim to be 'mature' you might want to test the 3.0i just to see. Age will help reduce insurance and fuel is about the same. Tax may be a negative depending on what they do in the future as it's a higher band. The 3.0 has got a lot of get up and go if you need to move quickly, accelerate from a junction, pass, etc. and in normal auto mode it is so docile to drive

The real advantage is that the 3.0 tend to have a lot more accessories and better equiped both as standard and those added/specced by owners.

Whatever you do try to find one with the sport button on auto and heated seats

x2

I gave which car a lot of thought as it was my return to sports cars after becoming disabled. The 3.0 auto works well for me in that it can be driven gently and lazily when you feel the need, but in sport mode it changes into a proper sports car.

Only thing is you might find the ride a bit firm on 18"s but I ind it ok.

Hey RustyZ4,
Thanks for your reply. How old is your strat?

Bob

Hi

It should actually say strats :D I have a white 1965 which is now showing its age, but is still a great guitar, a late 70' sunburst which I have customised somewhat, and a 2 year old custom shop strat which is just awesome, but still needs some bedding in  plus a few others which I wonr bore you with.

Do you play Bob?

2.2 manual is a great car- nit that im biased! not sure if its quick enough for an auto tho!

Not sure if this is of interest. Not sure I would.... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BMW-Z4-ROADSTER-2-2-MANUAL-STERLING-GREY-M-SPORT_W0QQitemZ300296830289QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAutomobiles_UK?hash=item300296830289&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1683%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

Bit late Sticks - sold for £8300. It may or may not be a bargain for someone

I'd be very wary though of a Cat D now fitted with an M bumper being sold as an 'M sport' and with an airbag light showing.

Indeed. Wonder if it'll feature on here. On PH recently someone was selling a 6 Series cat D with no V5 saying 'don't worry, you won't need it till you tax it'.

Nice to see some people are still optimistic. :) but I suppose someone will buy it.

Hi Rusty
Getting a bit off topic but I started it! I played drums in the 60's and bit after that. My two sons both play guitar; one gigs round Leeds using a Takemine and also has a recent Les Paul and my other son also has a Take I bought in Hong Kong some years ago and a Squire. I lust after an early Tele. Dream on.
Yours sound fab and worth a bundle!
Bob

Hi Sticks,
Yes I saw this one. The 'light damage' put me off. Not sure what cat d means. Can someone enlighten me please?
Thanks
Bob

A Category C or D write-off is one that insurers consider unecomonical to repair but one that could, given enough time in the workshop, be repaired and returned to the road.

Category A and B should never be returned to the road. A Category B write off is one that is so badly damaged it can only be used for the salvaging of spare parts, while a Category A is one that is sent to the crusher.
