2.0L - 06 Roadster - Crankshaft Pulley Problem (Perhaps)

Hi Guys,

I have just returned from a business trip and decided to take my car out.
Unfortunately, I got 5 mins down the road and the engine cut out. :( I called the AA and they told me that that timing chain had gone. So we towed it too the local garage.

Apparently, I have a problem were the crankshaft pulley has came away , has anyone else had this problem ? the pulley is in good condition , and seems the retaining bolt has worked lose , I have tried re tightening the bolt , but it works lose when trying to re-time the engine any ideas?

Please forgive me for my lack of mechanical knowledge, but if you could shed any light on the subject I would be eternally grateful as I've only had the car a few weeks. :headbang:

Thanks in advance!

This sounds similar ro an issue a colleague had on a 2.0i E46 of the same age.

I'll ask him tomorrow and see if it's the same.

Don't know the fix for this but will be following your progress as i have just bought the same model as yours, good luck.

Not heard of this before and I have the same engine. You say youve only had it a few weeks - did you buy it from a dealer or garage, if so take it back.

No unfortunatly I brought it private

Did the garage check that the pulley could be correctly located on the crankshaft?

I looked on realoem but cant see how the pulley is keyed to the crankshaft, but I can see what may be a slot for a woodruff key in the lower timing chain gear ....but no woodruff key

You probably didn't tighten it enough. The TIS torque spec is 300Nm, yes, three hundred newton-metres. I suppose you could apply some mild thread locker to the bolt, not sure it'll make much difference if properly torqued. You don't want to use any hard core locker, you do not want to risk not being able to remove the bolt when needed.

Hi All,

Apologies for the long reply I have only just had my car returned to me.

I will now try to explain in my laymens terms what happened for future post readers reference.

As mentioned previously, the car broke down and immediately the AA stated it was a Timing Chain fault.

I then took the car to a local garage and I believe what happened was they moved the bottom pulley and by doing so a gear/cog fell from the back.

I then took it to a BMW specialist who proposed that the vehicle had a timing chain repair done previously but it was incorrect causing it to fail. This was identified by removing a cover which had a new and seal which was brand new but a vehicle of its age should have been worn.

The engine had to be stripped down to the sump to locate the missing parts which had fallen off the pulley. These were located and the engine was then rebuilt using the existing parts as they were virtually brand new.

I now have the car back in my possession, working perfectly and can’t wait for the summer to arrive!

:)

It might be worth your while giving the person you bought the car off a call, from what you have described it looks like car has work done around the pulley quite recent and the bolt was not torqued up correctly. If it was a garage who did the work you might I know its a big might get some money off them to cover your costs. As they say you don't get if you don't ask.
