2.0i remap - how much difference to the acceleration?

Any recomendations for what to look out for/ask for when finding a good tuner?

Look for someone with a dyno for before/after power runs, look through b21’s old remap posts to see what can (and did) happen

Hi All
I’ve also heard that re mapping also increases your mpg as well as you acceleration…fact or fiction?

On average I'm getting somewhere between 1-2mpg better since the remap.
I'm putting that down to the fact that for a fair percentage of the time you're not using the extra performance but the extra torque is cutting down on gear changes (mine's a manual).
I wouldn't condone it for engine longevity, but once, just to prove a point, I went straight from 2nd to 6th and it pulled it, no problem at all.

blimey…that’s impressive, but like you say, it cuts the longevity of the engine…think I’ll leave mine as standard then…hardLy ever switch it to sport as it is..quite happy to plod along with the sun out and the roof down…way fast enough for me I suppose

In case you misunderstood, I meant changing straight from 2nd to 6th would knacker the engine. I have no qualms at all about the remap and even when pottering around it makes the car so much nicer to drive.

oh ok, thanks…maybe I’ll have a re-think about getting it mapped then…know my insurance (Aviva/ Norwich union for us old folk) won’t insure for the upgrade but guess I’ll shop about before I commit.

I've got a remapped 20i and live in Ashford if you're ever close by. I used https://www.mwrperformance.com/ for my remap with no complaints. It wasn't on a dyno but for £200 odd quid I couldn't say no. As others have said, it's made a huge difference.

I understand about the question i posed. And being a relatively mature chap of 51 i am ashamed of myself!

Still, it does give a level of measure for the performance improvement and an idea mentally if i cannot secure a ride in a remapped car!
It’s torque that pushes you back in the seat when you accelerate, a mapped 20i makes aprox 50% more torque than a standard car. That gives you more of an idea what difference it can make.
Whereabouts are you?
Rob

This ^

I do see a lot of quotes about 'bhp going from x to y' but its totally pointless to quote that in terms of performance of the car, more pointless than quoting 0-60 times! What you can say is your max bhp output is Y but you do not have this across the whole range and in most cases at different rpm you dont have that % increase either.

What is more important is the effect on torque. Arguably even moreso if you want a good drive, is flattening out the bhp curve, removing flat spots and overall increasing the area under the new curve.

I am not sure on the internals on the BMW cars as I am relatively new to them, but often there are tried and tested limits on stock internals - thats where the max bhp number becomes important to keep an eye on and know that it doesn't exceed limits! Also bear in mind what you see on the dyno run is purely a difference between the pre map and post map, dynos put out different numbers on the same car depending on the dyno.

Thanks, I’ll bare that in mind if I’m down your way 👌🏻

I’m late to this party.

I had my 20i remapped around a month ago to the 28i map. As you say you can look at the figures all day, but to drive it, mine’s now a completely different beast.

Had mine remapped at Evolve Automotive. Couldn't believe the difference. 0-60 is probably a tad over 5 seconds. 50-70mph performance is night and day.

Some great info here, and good to read people's experiences. I checked with my insurers (LV) and they want an additional £23 for the year! Bargain!

I will look for someone with a rolling road and consider the ideal tuning requirements posters have advised.
