2.0i and 2.0ise

The difference is actually between M Sport and SE models. M Sport has lowered stiffer suspension, sports seats, 18" MV2/135M alloys and M Sport steering wheel all as standard.
On a 2.0i model M Sport commands a higher price generally than SE. Some people however prefer the smaller 17" wheels and higher (15mm) standard suspension on the SE which they say is more forgiving. Horses for courses I reckon.

Just to advise that BMW either dropeed or bought in the SE designation at some point ( I can't remember which way round), so they are both the same.
As above on face lifts only there are SE or Sport, with Sport being the more desirable but an SE could easily have some Sport spec. If you can find an SE with M Sport seats, the rest is easy to change.
Yet the motoring press recommended the SE over the Sport. So I guess you need to do your research and then make up your own mind.

My facelift 2.0SE seems to have the best of both worlds. Its higher off the ground, softer suspension, 18 inch 241s, MFSW, Sport seats. Exactly what I was looking for, M sport spec but with a softer ride. I think the press are unimpressed by the extremely firm ride of the sport model as I am ( I use the car as a daily driver).
SE was introduced late in 2003. Previously there was no model designation.
3.0i models get M sport suspension as standard.
All other pre facelift models were standard suspension unless M sport was spec'd.
Facelift models were SE or Sport. Differences are covered above
