It looks like the valvetronic motor is on its way out on my 2 litre n46 engine. I had eml and check engine light come on whilst driving a couple times and went into limp mode - embarrassing and dangerous on the motorway! Anyway has anyone had any experience of having to swap this out? any ideas what a good price might be? Its not a job I want to do myself as it has to be calibrated once installed. ps its in an e46 coupe but its same engine as my old zed and e9x cars too........ cheers.

Its an easy job to do yourself

It dosent really need calibrating, it does do it its self but you can use inpa to chek that it works correctly

I got my motor on ebay for £40 and swapped it over and back together in 2 hours and that was with messing arround with inpa aswell

I too was like you and was unsure to do it myself or get somebody to do it because I had read about calibration. I had a quote for £150 cash I supply the parts

I don't have inpa but for 30 quid on ebay id buy the cable and laptop programme if you think its as simple as create access space and screw old one out and screw new one in!

If you buy the cable I have inpa I can give you if you have dropbox?

Under the vvt section in inpa there is three option vvt +, vvt -, and calibrate

The calibrate option does nothing

The + and - obviously rotate the motor one way or other

Depending on how long you are planning to keep the car you may want to get the rocker cover gasket from bmw to refit the rocker cover, mine had had it

I replaced my VVT motor with an OEM as mine was running rough and the VVT motor was making a grinding noise. Trouble is I now have a permanent 2A61 error code that cannot be erased. I even took it to a BMW specialist who couldn't get rid of the code either. Furthermore, you cannot hear the VVT motor when starting up, so it is not setting its stops. Best news is the car runs sweetly, lots of poke, steady tick over but you do noticed some spikes in power when going through the rev bands. I get the odd error messages and EML and engine light occasionally, normally catalytic related (nothing unusual there) but sometimes exhaust inlet manifold related so I assume linked to the VVT error.

Don't know where to look next. Is there a wiring diagram that shows where the VVT gets its data from the ECU? I've yet to find one that takes me to the correct pin. Is there a fuse in the system somewhere? Could it be a broken wire? I've had those before.
