2.0 to 3.2

i have 2.0, bought on a whim - considered, without seeing it or driving it, for only an hour before bidding closed. Anyway i love it but really wish i had more power, so have been day dreaming of engine transplant........

i know it wouldnt be a z4m (and would never dream of pretending) but if i could get my mits on a 3.2 lump what else would i need to buy for the car to allow me to enjoy over 300 bhp?

could i get away with only an exhaust and bigger/ better brakes?

That sounds like a lot of hassle, especially as BMW have already done all the hard work for you. Why not just sell the 2.0 and buy a 3.0si or M, or Alpina ? You'd be making your 2.0 very difficult to sell or insure.

I don't have the list of parts youd need, but its probably bigger than you first imagine .... Lump, Gear box, Exhaust, Air box, even a bigger battery and starter motor, I suspect the clutch ... the list just goes one.....

With petrol prices as they are, you may even find someone who will do you a swap. I specifically wanted a 2.0 as it was cheaper to run ( mpg, tax, insurance )...... someone with a 3.0 might want something cheaper to run ?

If sale or swap isnt an option ....Theres plenty of space around the 2.0 lump, have you thought about a super charger, should get over 200bhp without any lag ?

you both confirmed what i already expected! im not really in the market for a swap, just like the idea of instant power :driving:

TBH swapping most of the car's components doesn't sound all that "instant" to me - perhaps ESS do a Supercharger conversion (it might cost nearly as much as the car again though)

Best bet HAS to be a P/X for a 3.0l etc

If anyone wants to buy an //M theres never been a better time. For the extra performance they hardly cost any more on the used market than a 3.0si.

The easiest swap would be to put an S54 //M engine into one of the earlier M54 cars (2.2i, 2.5i, 3.0i) as it's quite an easy swap in the E46, the mechanicals bolt straight up. The hardest part is getting the ECU to intergrate but its certainly do-able. When my car dies i'm going to consider this option.
