2.0 timing chain

Hi all,

Is the timing chain on the 4 pot a big job? Ours has been diagnosed as timing chain issue. Not sure if it’s just jumped or whether it’s a guide issue. Or both.

So just wondering whether it’s worth sorting? Easy or complicated? Or cutting our losses (what I’m leaning towards).

Thanks in advance :)

Think the deathly silence speaks volumes! As I suspected, will get rid without investing further time and money! :)

I was quoted around £800 to have one changed in a Mini (local proper mechanic) and the access on the N20 can't be worse than those, so labour should be less.
Didn't have it done in the end, as it was the auxillary belt shredded so sounding like a cam chain flapping!

If its already causing issues then you could be looking at valve damage as well as the cost of the chain etc.

Hi thanks for the replies. Yes the N46B20 engine... but yes you got me... no not a e85 but our e87 2004. But same thing really hence he posting here. It's got a measly 55k miles. Well looked after with full service, MOT and rocker cover a couple of months ago. Been with us around a decade and until now, been problem free. It's been a good run, but time for it to go me thinks!

Ah I see.
Well it's a low mileage but I guess you have to weigh the cost against what it's worth.
Had it been a high mileage E85 I would have said break it for spares.

Honestly think it's only worth around £2/3k working. I recon I'd spend that to fix... Not a desirable car as such and equally not sure it's worth my time breaking.
If anyone wants it for a few hundred quid PM me lol.

At that mileage I would be looking at getting it fixed. But first I would be surprised if you had a timing chain problem at such low miles. Would it be worth getting another diagnosis before discarding car.

The engine isn’t noted for timing chain problems, if I was keeping it I would take the cam cover off and have a look at chain condition, if it does need doing the parts are cheap enough it’s labour if you have to pay to have it done.

Just a note to say bmw diagnosed and changed my timing chain around 5 years ago and charged in the region of 700 squid. Turns out there was nothing wrong with the chain and the original problem was the eccentric shaft sensor which is prone to getting oil on the contacts which then seals inside causing the module to pack up. If your car is running rough it may have something to do with this. Don't give up too soon.
