2.0 sdrive to 2.8i performance. ?

I find it massively ironic people say the 28i gives the best performance/£ ratio but my 35iS cost almost the same as an identically speced 28i due to the deals in place at the time of purchase.

Were there not similar deals on the other z4 models as well at the time? Making them equally as discounted.

A 4 cylinder is never going to sound as good as a 6. However it might be worth noting for anyone in the market for 28i its a good 100kg or so lighter than both the 35i and 35is. So a remapped 28i might actually be quicker than a standard 35i or even the 35is. Yet still deliver better fuel economy!

The BMW support massively compressed the 28i to 35i(S) price gap & gave nice steps if you bought a base spec car. The result was if you added electric seats, adaptive suspension & auto 'box to the 28i it closed the cost difference further. As I got the best possible deal & markup on a whole car is higher than the options (the auto box is an optional extra not a different model!) there was around £500 between the 28i, 35i & 35iS. At that point it's a no brainer.

Well from an owner of an 335i and an remapped 28i, I would not be so bold in saying that it would not be as quick as an standard 35i.

It will be very close

I have only played with an 235i - and there was not much init

What I would say that the Z4 28i handles better on an track than my old E92 335i

And regarding deals - the cost difference was to much to justify - however with hindsight I do less mileage now and fuel is cheeper.

As said previously I would seriously consider an 35is next

In straight line through-gears performance a ~300ps 28i should win against a 35i. It gets more interesting in a 50mph top gear roll on.

FWIW Youtube videos to me show a std 28i as noticeably slower acceleration on the speedo than a 35iS which you would expect. I would guess a remapped one would indeed be rather interesting ... but for me the warranty vs remap thing comes into it - as does the noise

Now, if a remapped 35iS could get the power down ... which I expect it could in the dry then

Mines mapped to 395bhp and it can get the power diwn quite well in the dry..

In the wet it's a different tale, but it would be a bit lethal to be doing full bore blasts in the rain..

In the wet as standard the car won't get much power down. It spins up easily and reminds you it is RWD :D

Does sound like you got a cracking deal! You really do have to question BMW's pricing logic here, doesn't make a lot of sense on the face of it, unless of course they have a pile of 6 cylinder engines they needed to shift!

Makes it even more annoying BMW didn't fit an LSD. Its not like the 35is had a M model sat above it in the range they were trying to differentiate from.

Very true,

In road use the Ediff works very well, what we have to remember is the amount of power and torque that we are p[ushing through the back wheels nowadays..

Its heck of a lot for any method to control.

When I spec'd up a 35iS even with the massive discount (via TRL of Baby BMW discount fame) it was IIRC £37K (albeit instead of £52K).
I opted for a 15 month old one with 2450 miles in mint condition (as you would expect at that mileage) for £29,900. Monthly payments for a new one were another £75 a month.

If a 28i when spec'd to near a well spec'd 35iS comes close to £37K I am surprised anyone buys one.

I sometimes wonder if BMW were thinking about the possibility of a E89 Z4M so left the door open for one.

I guess a V8 420 bhp would have been the thing to do at the time, but the S65 is a bit of a twitchy unit and have expensive problems..

I for one is happy that that the N54 was fitted, fully forged unit..... Very strong..

Yes I'll take the N54 all day long - most tunable BMW engine of all time! The S65 is glorious but not without issues (plenty of engines exploding now due to rod issues-put me off the M3 in the first place, hence coming to Z4).

The 28i is IMO the best value most sensible Z4 out there ... I have a 35iS but TBH on paper the 28i is 85% of the performance and a shed load more economical !
How much would you call a shed load of economy I've had my 28i almost a year and probably average around 25mpg on a normal week.
The car does 20 miles around town and 80 miles on a decent run with a few stops and roundabouts. I would be very interested how your 35is would compare.....
Cheers..

My 35is does between 24-25 mpg on the commute of 12 miles a day
Can crack 40 mpg on a run....

Incredible really...

Ouch ! The figures (yes, dubious know) seem to show it as great compared to a 35iS !

FWIW I am getting 15mpg in town, 24 on a normal run and have seen as high as 34mpg at 60mph on dual carriageway over 50 miles of relaxed driving.

When I wasn't driving short (5 miles each way so barely warm) London journeys I was getting 23-24mpg.
