2.0 or not 2.0 that is the query

Just back from a 360 mile round trip today. Managed 34.0 dead and I might have gone over the 70 limit somewhere sometime  and certainly had some traffic queues like the Dartford tunnel to contend with.

Now that's not bad for a big ol 3 litre :)

I think the mpg in the 3.0 is very good when driven sensible.

I frequently do London to Derby trip - 300 odd miles return and last Sunday driven at 65-70 mph steady i got 38.5 mpg.

During the roadworks at 50 mph i reset the second computer and was recording 44mpg :o

I even managed to get 380 miles + 50 miles remaining according to the computer per tank.

Although drive it like you stole it and i have seen my mpg go down to 20mpg.

Has to be the 3.0i.

Had mine 3 months, and even i think it needs a bit more power!

You only live once.

Mine is a mint 3.0i, bought it with 40k on the clock for 11k. Bought Approved Used from BMW with one year warranty thrown in..

Fully loaded. Has everything bar sports seats.

32+mpg on motorway
0-60 in 5.4 seconds
155 mph (restricted)

Like i say, 3.0i or nothing..

I read a post on here where someone who was 20 with 2 yr NCB had a 3.0si and was quoted less than 2k to insure!!!!!!!
I looked on confused.com and i had quotes for 2800 when i come to renew!!!! For a 2.0!!!
But back to topic i'd prob just go for the best u can afford....live to ur limits..i do and im happy
I'd love a 3.2 but im gonna wait till i get 3 yrs NCB and then maybe get an M3 convertible...
Only 18 months to go i guess.

That would be me, £1500 to insure my SI coupe.

I had a 318ci which had the 2.0 engine (143bhp) and it pulled well in top end of the revs but low revs wern't the best, but it was good on fuel use to get 38mpg around town and around 45 on motorway (wish it had a sixth gear!)

Good advice, i could of got a 2003-2004 3.0i but went for a 2007 2.0i as i wanted a newer car and only drive in town, my car was only 20 months old when i picked it up for £13.5k. It looks alot more money then it is.

OMG
just went on bell and got quote for less than £2000 for my renewal :D
welllll happy with that indeed!!!!!

Coming from a 225 TT that was remapped I find the 3.0i pretty good so far, I have only had it 4 Days now and after getting used to the SMG it is cetainly quick enough through the gears, Not a massive step up in power but still feels quick enough, well for road use anyway.

Running costs in terms of fuel seem on par with the TT and I have been "enjoying" the Z4 and have been getting about 20mpg so under normall day to day driving I can imagine it achieving 25-35mpg

Insurance is slightly more than the TT but I have got quotes to renew for around £1000 in July (21 3yr NCB)

I paid 10k for my 04 3.0i SMG roadster, 12month warranty, brand new PS2's, SMG all the options inc Nav etc bar M seats I would like to think I am going to lose minimal amounts in depreciation. The 3.0 is a great lump esp in the Z4, I cant imagine anything else (maybe the 3.2 Lump :))

My Gf has a 2.0 Bmw and it is dire, the 4pot sounds strangled and wheezy and the econonmy is not much better than mine as the engine has to struggle all the time.

I would definitle have a test drive of a few but would def recommend the 3.0 its a great lump and very good on fuel for the power

The 2.0 isnt exactly slow, will still hit 60 in 7.9s and top end it keeps on going way past legal speed limits. Would of been nice if they put the 2.0 170bhp engine in instead of the 147bhp.

It all depends on what you want from the car.

Just checked up on the 2.0 Z4 and they are quicker than I thought, 8.5 Secs to 60. Should keep the boy racers at bay lol.

WhatCar recommend getting the 2.0 SE and they do say avoid the 3.0i Sport.

Looks like Woots has got the better car over all of us 3.0s petrol heads lol, he was right all along!

Please don't encourage Woots - he's bad enough as it is.

I'm sure What Car consider all sorts of things like depreciation from new, cost per mile to run, etc. but the majority of people buying a zed do it for very different reasons. I suspect the majority are second cars or at least owners have a second car.

Hey woots - I reckon my daughters Ka is a better handling car than the Zed :) It's so chuckable and my others Cooper S with it's mighty 1.6 would give even the 3.o's a run

hmm good theory..perhaps one day i ll come up to urs...u can test both cars while i take ur daughter out for a nice dinner somewhere... :| :)
i wont tell my gf tho.. :driving:

Where did you get 8.5s from? Offical BMW figures are 8.1 to 62mph/7.9 to 60mph.

Having driven a 2.0l i dont think it is a slow car - however the 3.0 feels much faster then the 2.0, even if it isnt massively quicker (well over 2 sec quicker to 62, is a big difference!)... the 3.0 is much much more torquey, i can leave mine in 6th gear and cruise from under 20mph to 70+ , if i did the same in the 2.0 it would sputter all over the place.

I'd rather have a car that sounded nicer than it went...
Something like a 4.0 V8 from the M3 would do me... i'd happily cruise round town with the roof down in second gear listening to that!!!

Well, I had a 2007 2.0i for a year or so and loved it. Enough power to get you killed and only once or twice did I drive it feeling like I could use a bit more power. All that said - Im driving a 58 Coupe now - but in honesty the clincher for me was that I bought a hard top for it and much preferred the look to the soft-top - the next logical step was the lovely 3.0si coupe in the dealers....lol

Anyway - dont get me wrong - the coupe scares the crap out of me sometimes - especially this time of year when Im not driving it all the time - getting out of a 1.0 3 cylinder "V" reg Corse into the 3.0 Zed is a huge change! haha - but you wont be disappointed with the 2.0i roadster - especially now its warming up a bit for some roof down motoring.
