The missus has finally been swayed to leave the 350z behind because she wants a daily driver that's a bit more economical but is still fun. She's tested a 2.0 and really enjoyed it. However, she's concerned about losing the ability to do "lazy overtakes" by letting the torque of the engine do all the work, rather than changing gear. I'm worried that the incredible nimbleness of the 2.0 might be blunted by the heavier 2.5 engine.

What do you guys think?

If you're considering the 2.5, then get the 3.0 - better spec, not much MPG difference, more powerful, 6 speed box.

You can let the torque do the overtakes then too.

I agree with this. Your choice should really be between the 2.0 and 3.0 depending on what your after.

That sounds like a good point. And in a sense, it's kind of made the decision. :wink:

Not sure about UK stats but for the US models 03/05 the MPG rating is actually better for the 3.0i with manual trans.

2.5i = 20/28 manual
3.0i = 21/29 manual

2.lt, because it has 6 gears, newer & modern engine wich is very economic (mine is 8.5 - 10.00 lit/100 km), and retains the fan in driving.
The only handicap is the lack of the 6cylinder sound :cry:

If she's used to the 350z, then I don't think she'd be happy with the 2.0 in all honesty.

Would be a significant drop in power

Yep apart from the lack of 6 cylinder sound I am really happy with my 2.0, esp the way petrol prices are going.......

Its not exactly slow either when driven right 8)

If you want newer with warrenty and face lift go 2.0l

If your looking older then 2.5 - 3.0l

The age of the car was a big issue for me.

Hey Spokey!

Having test drove the 2.0i (150bhp) Sport and the 2.5i (177bhp) Sport back to back, there really isn't much noticeable difference in the performance between the two, the 2.0i does have a certain nimbleness that the 2.5i doesn't but of course you don't get that wonderful soundtrack. Having said that, around 5-6k revs it does sound nice. I get 38mpg average with mainly spirited driving around country roads. Running on 98ron petrol also makes a noticeable difference to performance.

I also drove a 2.5si (218bhp) Sport and that was quite a bit faster than the 2.0i.... quite noticeable and the one I would have gone for if it hadn't been £5k more...

I went for the 2.0i and I'm perfectly happy, and the newer ones with the Efficient Dynamics systems (2007 build week 34 onwards) average 40mpg.

If she was happy enough on the test drive 2.0i, then I reckon - like me - when you get used to the characteristics of the 2.0i engine you can learn to overtake using the right revs and gear and she will be even happier, but its no way as fast as what she's used to!

If you want something inbetween then the 2.5si might be the one.

I can only speak for Northern Ireland but dealers here are falling over themselves right now to sell cars, especially niche models such as the Z4. As one of the local salesmen told me "Its a buyers market, we are taking low bids on stock cars"..... Try asking your local dealer for an overnight test drive of each of 2 models to help you decide.

Good luck and let us know!

My first Z was a 2.5si sport. My mate currently has an 07 2.0 sport. The si engine is a significant improvement on the earlier one so if you can go for that either as 3.0l or 2.5. The current 2.0 sport is a superb car and very nimble but would feel very underpowered compared to a 350Z.

Personally I think the 2.5si sport with a half decent spec is all the sports car you really need (says he who traded it in for an 'M' 8) )

Just out of interest, why is she "not interested" in the 3.0? With fuel prices going the way they are at the moment 3.0 cars are hard to sell, so you can get some good deals.

I know there is naff all difference fuel economy wise with the 3.0, but the general public dont seem to understand this and as such shy away from 3.0 cars at the moment.
