2.0 E85 2007 - Engine Misfire - Possibly Vanos Solenoid.

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone will PLEASE be able to give me some advice on my issue. - my car is a 2007 e85 2.0

I have experienced a lumpy idle from when i first bought the car back in 2020, but after going back to the dealership to find it had an air leak from the air filter pipes amd these being replaced, it did run slightly smoother but there was still that slight hesitation. Just last year i replaced the VVT Motor and reset all adaptions as this had failed. Yet i still had a slightly lumpy idle/hesitation. which leads me to the issue i have been having over winter, which has got progressively worse.

So upon startup during the winter months on cold mornings/evenings i would receive a flashing engine light when setting off to/from work. This always happens under load, but then continued to disappear after about 20 seconds or so of driving. this has now got to the point where i will have a solid engine light constantly on as the car cleary is misfiring, and continues to bring back up the same fault as read below. :headbang:

After plugging in the the diagnostic kit i receive these codes.
29CC - Combustion Misfire on several Cylinders.

29CE - Misfire Detection Cylinder 2 In 4 Ignition Sequence

I have now tested all 4 coils and even tried a new coil just to see if i can get the misfire to follow a certain cylinder. I have done the same process with the spark plugs amd have now even replaced all 4 spark plugs just to eliminate them from the test. ( I really am trying not to throw money/parts at it, so thought the best place to go next was here.

After researching and reading some posts it looks like the vanos solenoids can cause similar/ the same issues i am having. is it worth trying to replace them next? I would really appreciate any help on the matter. (p.s sorry for the long read) but thought it best to explain my whole process of owing the car. Thanks

Hopefully someone more conversant with the four pot will help but you seem to have eliminated most of what I would suggest except perhaps cleaning the MAF.

Unusual that no one else has chipped in. I know you have had the intake pipe replaced but if I were you I would give it another going over to check everything is tight and look under the plastic pipe with a mirror just to eliminate any possibility of a crack.

I have a 4-pot but I haven’t chipped in purely because I’m not sure what to try next. Sorry. Cheapest route is to double check all the pipes for leaks as suggested. Sometimes doing up a jubilee clip can squeeze the pipe end so a gap opens.
Never rule out the simple stuff.
If that fails then I’m guessing the solenoids would have to be next.

Maybe check out the eccentric shaft sensor. Oil can get into the delicate electrics via the plug situated at the top front corner of the rockerbox cover. Have a look inside the plug and it's connectors for oil. The eccentric shaft motors can also pack up but I don't think this is as common a problem.I don't know what bmw were thinking when they created this type of variable valve timing, its over complicated without that much gain.
Many peeps look down on the 2litre engine but when sorted it ain't half bad and is much lighter than the 3 litre.

Good point. I’d assumed that would be changed with the VVT servo, but not everyone sees them as a combined unit

Hi Karim,
I recently had a shed load of engine issues mostly the result of a perished valve / rocker cover gasket.
Sorted now thankfuly but maybe worth checking for oil leaks around that area.
Robert.

I'd remove the vanous solinoids clean them up and try them again..
It made a difference on.my 2.0l .
I cleaned them out with electrical wire cleaner whilst attaching wires from a battery to the solinoids to get them to open and close..
Then, dry them off and re oil them and replace them.
Try swapping them over to see if theres any difference between inlet and outlet solinoids performance..
And see if any more codes come up or it rattles like a diesel..
It could mean a lazy solinoid.not fully functioning.

They are not expensive to buy..

A question for you now please.where was your air leak in the intakes, for future reference.
Allways good to know.
