I buy much of my computer plus needs from a shop called Micro Center. They have a massive edge over the other big box merchandisers: their salespeople actually know what they are talking about. I subscribe to their newletter and last night I got my weekly teaser. This one, however, reminded me of how far we have come as a consumer nation and how far we may be going in the future. What I am getting at is they sent me a flyer to buy a Western Digital Caviar GP 1TB IntelliPower Serial ATA-300 Hard Drive for $130. It wasn't that many years ago that a 100MB drive was considered massive for that price and here we have a 1TB for a bargain price of $130. Simply amazing.

What's annoying is how quickly you go through the space now. I don't own a television or stereo, so my entertainment media is downloaded mp3s and video on my laptop. I'm over half-full on a 320GB hard drive. My first laptop had a 20GB drive and I never came close to filling it.

On the plus side, "Iron Man" came out today and I had pre-ordered the download, so the movie was already sitting on my drive when I woke up this morning. :)

20gb!! I studied and completed my MBA 13 years ago on my homebuilt 316 chip pc with a 40mb hard drive. Using compression software I got it up to 60mb. When my fellow student upgraded from 2mb of ram to 8mb I thought he flipped.... How could he need more than?? Most of my assignments were submitted on a 1.44mb floppy.

I remember the BBC micro too! fond memories. First PC had a whole 1MB of RAM, 5.25" floppy and a 20MB HD... how times change :D

In high school, I programmed Fortran on punched cards.

On my last Z4 Road Trip (See Roundel, Sept & October 2008) I took 101GB of digital photos.

I remember the days when my dad used to tell me that one day you won't have to write with a quill son. Electrical things will do it all on a television and shoot the final page out of a grey box full of ink on the desk. Then he started taling about a man on the moon and music and pictures on a wristwatch sized gadget and I knew he was talking crap...

Right back to 1tb hard drives then.

I cant understand how you fill 1TB!! I download with the best of them but after watching a film rarely keep it. If I want it again I'll download it again.
Why not but some blank DVD's (approx half the price for 1.5 times the storage volume :fuelfire: ) :D

However the fact that more people know what an ATA hard drive is is a sign of the times. (or perhaps it's something to do with the kind of folk that hang around these boards?)

My first computer was a 486 with a 80 mb hard drive. After a year, it was full and I bought a 520 mb drive for a ridiculous amount of money, but told everyone that I would never need another hard drive, EVER!  Then I put a 14.4 modem on that machine. Blazing fast downloads, usually within 3 or 4 hours! When I upgraded to a 14" .26 dot pitch monitor I knew I was a real man.

My mate had a 4mb 3dfx graphics card, and I was amazed at that :dizzy: I mean, who needs more than 4mb in a graphics card :slaphead:
