1st to 2nd Gear Shifts

Have soemthing similar myself... Can not change fast enough though.. seems to be "lagging"... but this goes through all the gears if i floor it :driving: Remember reading something about it here, some small piece in the bmw´s that make them change gear slower or something, sure someone with much more experience can enlighten me :)

Yeah the 1st to 2nd change is just horrible. Sometimes in town its easier just going 1-3.

Also, is it just me or when your stopped at traffic lights does yours feel a little stiff going into gear? Fixes itself if you depress the cluctch a few times.

Try not using 1st and just set off in 2nd, it works for smoother progress

Feels funny at first though :D

Its just completely different to my previous cars. for example in the Rx8 the change was smoot as silk in town but at very high rpm it slowed down somewhat. In the M its smooth as silk at high rpm..... :?

PS - nice car Andy, best colour

Probably about 4 or 5 times in the 2 years of owning this car, I've grinded the 1st-to-2nd shift. It's very rare that it happens, but at the same time it has done it, and I've been sure it wasn't my "fault". They were quick changes, usually on a hard acceleration run, but the clutch was fully depressed at the time, it was just that the synchros just couldnt keep up.

I would really, really recommend getting a CDV. It makes such a difference to the feel of the clutch and the driveability of these cars. I don't see how people struggle to notice the difference. I guarantee if you are having trouble getting a smooth 1st/2nd gear change, it will totally eliminate your ability to kangaroo the car down the road on occasion! Most cars don't have these valves, so there's no reason to believe that by removing it you're going to blow the gearbox into thousands of tiny pieces. Certainly it was a mod I did very early on, and I'm now close to 40k miles, with a lot of track driving in there, and all feels fine! :)

That's a question I can't give an answer to. I think the dealer would have to firstly notice that you had made the change (quite unlikely, unless you asked them to do it), and then prove that the valve change was the reason for a failure etc.

I've had warranty work carried out on my car since the valve change, and no one has batted an eyelid...

Toplad, I went for KW Clubsports in the end, rather than the V3s. Probably best to start another thread though.

Some friendly dealers may even fit them....

It can only in my opinion be a problem if it causes a direct issue as opposed to the original part, in my understanding but I may be wrong. :D

Easy to put the OE valve back in if you have a drivetrain problem that requires warranty work. Most in the know suggest you actually save wear and tear on the clutch material because of the quick engage - of course, the only reason it's there in the first place is to eliminate shock off the drivetrain - like most things BMW does these days, all will work fine until after warranty is over

A quick demonstration to the dealer resulted in a query being raised with BMW and they authorised a replacement gearbox, which is being fitted tomorrow :D For info: I do have the modified CDV fitted, which made no difference to the grinding after it was installed.

Cheers,

Pete.
So what was the result after fitting a new gearbox... Did the 1st to 2nd gearshift still feel notchy?

Don't know about changing the gearbox but i have changed my gearbox oil and my first to second is now almost perfect in fact i would say its perfect and the rest of the gears are spot on, What a difference and for a 29,000 mile car i have never seen such dirty oil, I have done the clutch pedal mod and removed the valve in the clutch line as well.

Pardon my skepticism but as the originator of this thread I feel it is my duty to call you on this one. I'm not saying that changing your MTF didn't improve your shifting but I'm sure you didn't have the problem I originally described. If you did, changing the fluid would not have cured it - trust me, others including myself have tried.

I would like to report that I have solved this problem for my car by learning to live with the deficiency of this transmission. It is my only option. I could have tried to thrash the syncros to death before the warranty expired but I just didn't have it in me to do that to the rest of the drive train. I drive my car very conservatively 99% of the time. It would have been nice to just know that my race inspired car had the capability of close to redline shifts for the other 1%. I now do not shift from 1st to 2nd over 6,000 rpm, and even then I do it slowly and carefully. Still unhappy - but problem solved.

Sorry i was not trying to say that i have any sort of problem with my box at all let alone the same fault as yours, As we both know the gearboxes are just a bit shell we say difficult, I am just saying changing my oil made mine nicer to use and its no surprise when you see the condition of the oil that came out of car, My point was that waiting till the inspection 2 to change oil in my opinion is not a good idea, Sorry if i have spoken out of turn,

I have the same problem with the gearbox. If i push 1st hard and wanna put the second gear in sometimes it doesnt even work.
From 1st to second i need to take my time slowly put the gear in and it's ok. But it sucks and i dont have warranty anymore. and changing all that is pretty expensive surely
