1st time purchase advice needed

Greeting All

I like the look of the E89 Z4 and am considering purchasing one but am not really sure if this would make a wise purchase for myself.
My garage is converted into a home office and so cannot use it and would not be asking these questions had it not been.
Not really a fan of the E86, TT, 370Z, S2000 and I cannot afford a Boxter.

1. With the Z4 being my only vehicle will it be OK to park outside all year round ?
2. Having not owned a convertible before and after having read a few posts regarding roof problems am I asking for trouble ?
3. I am just guessing but probably for most owners it is a 2nd car and is also garaged.

Mine is a 13 plate and my garage is only just big enough for my motorbike so the Zed stays on the drive. I think it's as secure as a "normal" car and they're not generally going to antagonise the mindless youths that might target a Ferrari, Aston etc.

Any convertible is open to having problems with the roof but I don't think the BMW is any worse than others.

Thankfully vandalism or theft is not really a concern for myself.
Potential problems with the roof mechanism or leaks from rain water are, how long have you owned your Z4 ?

Hi, they seem pretty durable & don’t suffer from the weather in the same way a soft top can with mould etc.
Most owners don’t experience problems, people don’t tend to post here if their car’s issue free
Whereabouts in the country are you & what model e89 are you considering?

Encouraging to hear most owners don't experience problems.
I am Located in Warwickshire and am looking for preferably a N52 3.0 litre with Sat Nav ideally in white.

Have you looked at the classified section on here? There’s a few available :)

Thanks buzyg.
It's the first time i have joined a car forum and am impressed and appreciate all the quick replies

There's enough around to be able to narrow it down to what you want but not so common that you see them everywhere.

I've had mine about 6 weeks. Had it remapped after 3 days. The standard 20i output was a bit weedy for my liking. Makes me smile every time I open the taps....

Welcome aboard

Observation: if you can afford a E89, there are plenty of Boxster options at the same price point, albeit for an older car. Do seem to be a lot of abused examples out there however.

Good luck with your search and decision making process - had a very similar list to those you mention.

The E89 roof is as watertight as a ducks arse. I have pressure washed mine and not been able to force a leak from any angle  Great car in the 3L. Mine is a treat to drive.

Yes agreed, I do like the 981 but there is the higher price tag, if things do go wrong could potentially turn out expensive and doubt part availability is anywhere close to a BMW's.

Many moons ago I have previously owned an E36 M3 and an E46 318i for over a period of 13 years they both turned out to great on the reliability and maintenance side.

Thank You for the detailed comparison :)

Anybody able to post a link on this site or elsewhere to a "E89 buying guide" or equivalent listing some of the common problems and what to look out for on viewing ?

Get a friend to sit in it then direct your pressure washer at the bottom of the rear shell, friend gets a neck wash.... Otherwise completely waterproof
