1st And 2nd Gear Issue

Hi all,

I have a small issue that has developed in my 2.0 Z4. I have an issue getting the car into 1st and 2nd, its very stiff and when it does want to go in it has to be forced. I can drive the car fine clutch feels fine and the rest of the gears seem fine also, its just that 1st and 2nd seems stiff and sometimes just docent want to go into gear.
I have been told it could be a few things low in gearbox oil, or the linkages or the gearbox itself. The car has covered 58k miles so I'm hoping that it won't be the gearbox...
Firstly I'm not a mechanic or any good with much of the cars mechanics :( so is the gearbox oil easy to put in and will it have a transmission filter that needs to be replaced??? Not sure on this :?
Is this something that i can do myself or is it best to get it looked at with a mechanic....
Has anyone had this issue or can anyone give some advice as i can't find much on the forum

Thanks in advance jon

I haven't got an answer, but had similar problems with my previious 2.0 Zed. Sometime (not always) it stubbornly refused to go into 1st gear and I'd be there holding up traffic as the lights went to green, so I'd have to force it hard to engage the gear.

Thats exactly the issue I'm having :O
The car drives perfectly no sound of crunching or the clutch slipping etc....
I ve had a search and some say that removing the cdv valve can help with changes into 1st and 2nd do you think this is a good thing to try firstly as it seems its an easy job to do? This may help out i suppose anyway and a highly recommended mod to do!

There could be a number of issues but one issue to check is worn engine mounts can cause that problem. If you are not applying power to the engine does that make the shifting easy? If the answer is yes it could be the engine mounts need replacing.

Well I'm not sure it would be sorted with a CDV delete - thats more a mod which smooths out the slight bunny hopping on first and second gears. My current Zed was a bit clunky in first and second gears with the CDV so after careful consideration I had the CDV delete done, and it really smoothed out the gear changes. But what you're describing (and what I experience in my previous Zed) sounds like something else is amiss. Lets see what others say.

When i am on stop in say traffic lights it is very difficult to get it into first, not all the time though , but as you said when i am moving it seems to be ok. I will look at the engine mounts tomorrow, i presume these are easy to locate and see if they are worn?

I'm having the exact same issue in my 2.0

I feel like a right liability sometimes when struggling to get into gear. I've removed my CDV so it's nothing to do with that. I'm hoping a new gearbox oil may help......

Can you let me know when you change the gearbox oil to see if it makes a difference for you, are you completing this yourself? As I'm looking to at least attempt it to keep the costs down on labour!

I find the same on my 3.0si which I have recently changed the gearbox oil on and had CDV removed.

If you bring in the clutch in neutral quickly it should slot home fine no problem. I have a sneaking suspicion my clutch may not be what it once was.

Hi

I posted something similar last year. I had the transmission fluid changed and the gear changes have been greatly improved. I was having problems getting her into 1st at lights and roundabouts but much easier now.

CDV removal will not help in selection of gears, it only has any effect when taking your foot off the clutch when taking up drive. It's sim is to prevent transmission shock by the driver dumping the clutch.

That said, it's still a worth while mod to do.
