If someone had told me 5 years ago that I would be a member of a car forum and drive 1000's of mile just for fun I would have thought they were mad. I clearly remember the OH returning from his first forum run with loads of photos which we all got talked through, and thinking this is going to be worse than golf.
Not sure how me and the girls started, but soon it was a case of taking turns in the passenger seat on each run and I bagged the trip to Skye. The Saturday was a great run. Putting the tents up was "interesting" and we had a fun night in the local pub.
Sunday the OH wasn't feeling so well, so I ended up driving and tagged on to the back of the run. I'd not driven the Z4 very much before then so was a bit nervous, but I was soon having fun
I think it was on the next forum run when a very nice red E85 was potentially being sold that we started to think about getting a second Z4. That fell through and we looked a quite a few before finally settling on another E86. The forum kindly presented us with a tin opener to rectify the error of our ways
We successfully managed to get two teenage daughters, two tents, cooking equipment etc into two Z4's and set off on a hoon around Europe. We visited the Black Forest and ended up in Switzerland. It was a fab holiday which we've repeated 3 times, although with less tenting and more hiring of houses
A few more forum runs followed, all great fun and then there was Silverstone. My first time on a race track, but no worries as we will only be driving slowly. What followed was one of the scariest and most exciting drives I've ever done. I'd love to do more track time - and apologise again to any I held up
Sometime after this the OH decided his car was just not driving a well as mine. A trip to the garage later and a quote for around £800 which "may" improve it proved very expensive. I worked hard on persuading him to get an E89 but the local dealers let us down badly and a move to the dark side was unavoidable.
Craig and John kindly allowed Ex Z4 owners to tag onto the back of the National so another family camping trip took place ( photo by Tomscott)
I finally found some love for the Cayman, ironically on another Skye run. It's an incredibly capable car, very fast and very planted. Is it better than the Z4 - yes. Do I love it as much - no
Looking back is odd. I'm sure I've forgotten lots, but hopefully you will all remind me. I remember lots of banter and fun, I remember incidents of getting lost on runs, and a few close calls with sheep (sk93) and seagulls stealing chips (Taz)
So it's a big thank you to all who make this forum a great place to be. To all who put a lot of effort into organising runs and events. Are we mad to drive a few hundred miles to go for a drive? Probably but let's take more photos like these this year too
