18in Rims

Does anyone know why when 18in rims are fitted on the Z4 the front are 8J and the rear 8.5J, is there a technical reason for this?

Will it be OK to fit 18in 8J rims to the rear as well instead, with the same tyre size as the front?

Cheers

no idea why they do it, more grip for the driven wheels maybes?

Think lotus1 has gone and lost the staggered setup but im not sure...

That's correct - I've got 8J front and rear now...I don't think it's that noticeable either looks or perfomance-wise

Yes and there is plenty of choice on Ebay at very reasonable prices. :)

Cheers for the replies so far.

My Type 4 Reps were from an Ebay shop - £499...with tyres! :P

The staggered setup is used on the cars with sport suspension. I have know idea how you car would handle if you change.I'm one of the type guys that if the stock setup is staggered, I will keep it staggered. IMHO

I'm an ex-TVR owner...I like a bit of oversteer :P

Actually there is a technical reason for engineers to choose different wheel withs (and tire size as well as wheel offset). Much of it has to do with lateral performance dynamics. In the case of high performance RWD cars, they work with these factors to balance understeer to their liking. As well, they work with these factors to minimize load transfer during quick lane changes (driving around cones is a good example). The car's f/r weight distribution is also taken into account.

It's all part of the total engineering package when a car is developed. The Z4's 18" option w/sport suspension is obviously how the engineers spent most of their time doing laps when developing this car. :driving:
