18i and 20i

Morning all,

Are there any mechanical differences between an 18i and a 20i ?

I know the engines are the same, but what about brakes, gearing etc?

I also know that the 18i is typically lower specification, but it’s the mechanics that I’m interested in.

Many thanks.

A 18i is a 20i with a de tuned 20i engine.

As you said it tends to be ‘damaged’ with a lower spec air con system and typically missing options.

A 28i is the same as a 20i except for 330mm front discs vs 300mm discs on the 18i and 20i. :tumbleweed:

There are some software differences buried deep in various systems but they are not of any consequence to most folks.

Brilliant, thanks Peter

Apart from the 'manual' a/c and lack of auto dimming mirrors as standard (or it may be auto folding can't remember), the base spec of the 18 and 20 in the same guise (SE or Msport) is identical.
18is do 'tend' to have lower specs, presumably as when ordering the cheapest version, people didn't want to negate the savings on multiple options.
A well optioned 18 is better VFM used than the equivalent 20.

It was the only model (in 2014) that came with cloth covered seats as standard, as you say how it was optioned is what matters..

When you got it to the same spec as a 20i there wasn't much of a saving..

I guess that's why onlu 1,400 ish got sold in the UK versus over 7,500 20i..
