135 coupe

Well after not much luck in getting the "right" z4 coupe i decided to start looking at some other options, and up popped the 1 series coupe ive always thought they look quite nice so thought id give one a try.

Today i did just that in a 135i and i must say wow at the power ! it was rapid and felt quite involving but not as involving as the Z obviously.

I definately dont think it looks as nice as the Z but finding the right coupe having all the right box's ticked is becoming a bit of a pain and im beginning to think its just not meant to be again.....

In terms of looks the Z wins hands down for me, performance wise the 135i will take some beating. Im not sure which will be more reliable the N52 engine seems to be litte troublesome for some owners im pretty sure ive heard of some problems with the turbos on the 135i but not 100%.

So do i go for a 135i with the chance i may regret not having a stint in a Z or keep the search going for the "right" Z ? :o

Several of your comments suggest you should have some patience and wait for the Z :

You don't seem to really be chasing power as much as you think - and the Z is so low I'm sure the feeling adds 20 virtual mph and associated acceleration to whatever the speedo says. You'll regret it every time you pass one in your shiny coupe/hatchback that doesn't look as nice, or any different to all the other 1 Series on the road bar the badging. Trust me, I went from a 2.5 Z to a (faster, noisier, 'safer') Focus ST and I missed it every single time I saw one. Took me 3 years but I'm back in the saddle and loving it.

Patience - you'll find one

I took the plunge 6 weeks ago and now have an Imola Red Z4M Coupe with Champagne seats. The car is fantastic and I'm finding it hard to keep out of it - hence 3,000 miles in 6 weeks. I would hang on for the Z4. Good hunting. Let us know when you purchase.

Stick it out for what you want it will come up sooner than you think!

Theres only 10bhp/ton difference between the 135 and the 3.0 coupe, even though the torque is significantly different.. I would go for the lighter coupe anyway but thats just me.. looks, uniqueness both in its favour.

Im going to continue the loooong search for the Z4 but also keep my eye on the 135 at the same time, my ideal is the Z but if nothing comes up soon im going to take the hint lol

Cheers guys !

Send me the spec of Z you are looking for Adam and I'll keep an eye out as I'm keeping tabs on the market for me anyway.

This would be my order:

125i > Z4 Coupe > 135i > Z4MC (> Cayman S)

My OH has a 125i, and it's a much "better" car than the Z4, by which I mean it's much easier to live with and actually I prefer it to drive when you're not on it. But it's less thrilling than my MC, and the variants of that 135i engine I've driven (in a 335i) didn't sound anything like as good as I was hoping.

I should point out that I don't care how a car looks, once it's sufficiently attractive. I don't open the garage and look at my OH's car and think that she's got the raw deal on the visuals for example.
