It is sometimes cheaper just to take being caught speeding on the chin.

A speeding driver has to pay £11,000 for challenging his ticket after a prosecution expert hired an airfield and a sports car to prove him wrong.

David Pickup, 45, was clocked doing 101mph in his Audi R8 on the A55 at Lloc in Flintshire in April 2014.

Flintshire Magistrates' Court heard a police speed camera caught him and he asked officers: "Can we call it 98?".

Pickup, from Wilmslow, Cheshire, who has a holiday home in Abersoch, Gwynedd, was convicted of speeding.

He denied breaking the 70mph speed limit and said that a number of people from Cheshire had second homes in Abersoch, which he called a millionaire's paradise.

The defence questioned the accuracy of the in-car police speed camera so the prosecution hired an expert who rented an airfield and an Audi R8 to carry out tests, the results of which were presented to the court.

Pickup was fined £675, given six points on his licence and ordered to pay the full prosecution costs - which included the testing - of £10,384.

I don't think he will pull that stunt again,he new what speed he was doing.being a smart arse has not worked for him this time. :D

I wish they'd just fix the speed limits and enforce them, or stop enforcing them. 101 in an R8 is similar to 60 in a corsa :p

In what way? Breaking distance? Feel etc.

But you might hit a Corsa and it would break.

Braking distance and handling. I mean, my connection between R8 and Corsa is purely guestimate, and i've no idea what road he was on.. if it was a 30mph limit through a town .. well. If it was 101mph on the M1 (outside of the stupid 50mph limit bit that's dangerously narrow).. i have no problem with this.

EDIT: We don't need to have a debate about human reaction times.

I thought over 100mph was an automatic ban.
And what does having a holiday home in Abersoch have to do with anything?

A mate of mine got £300 and a 28 day ban for 120 on his fireblade- that was back on Diana's funeral day and the A69 was deserted !

Silly me, clearly the problem isn't the Idiot doing 101mph & 31mph over the speed limit, it's everyone else doing 70mph... :D

I had points a big fine when I was caught over 100mph.

Mind you I don't think I was doing over 100mph, 3 up in an old Renault Clio auto. Top wack was 105 mph on paper (manufacturer) and I was done for 101. I didn't believe it but I knew I was speeding, but more like 95. I hated the way the police make you look like public enemy number one.

Hmm. Holiday home in Abersoch, lives in Wilmslow. And he appears to have boasted about it, too.

I don't want to offend anyone on this forum, but even Jeremy Clarkson seems to think Cheshire has more than its fair share of boorish plutocrats. I used to live there in my youth, and return visits don't suggest it's improved.
