I know corrosion issues on these are well documented but I'm a little disappointed with my alloys. At the time of sale (just over a week ago), they looked OK. Not the best, not the worst. No obvious signs of corrosion. :thumbsup:
After seeing a couple of threads on the forum re 108's and taking a closer look at mine, it looks like someone's done a DIY refurb on mine. Sprayed over the front face without splitting so covering the bolts. It also looks like it's had some sort of surface prep prior to paint application as there seems to be shot blast (tiny ball bearings) stuck between the mating faces of the outer and inner part of the rim. What urged me to look closer was some "iron coloured rust runs" on the alloys which I've assumed is from the blast aggregate. I've seen alloy wheel corrosion before and it's normally white/black corrosion from under the coating isn't it?

I didn't know what I was looking for last week and I'm annoyed at myself for missing it. I'm guessing the ridiculous amount of rainfall we've had recently has highlighted the issue.

I'm going to call the dealership tomorrow and mention this. Where do I stand with something like this?

Sadly I think you'll be out of luck. They're not faulty and you inspected the car prior to purchase.

Try, but be prepared to be left to deal with it yourself. Get them properly refurb'd, it'll be a good investment as 108s are the dogs danglies.

That or buy some new wheels and the sell yours or use them for winter tyres.
 
What a shame. 108s are the best rims for a roadster IMO. I'm with Stuart. Worst case scenario is to get them refurbed. Hopefully wont cost too much

Terrible work and very poor to be left in that state.
I hope it's a decent dealer, if so then you'll be OK for a claim. They had clearly wiped the surface clean and then the rust reappeared.

Under SOGA you'll be in a strong position to push for them to be properly refurbished.

BTW - 108's correctly refurbished are without dounbt the best of the oem fit rims for the Z4 roadster. They just ned a little care or correctly finishing.
 
Thats terrible... Must have been shot blasted, with the sand running stuck in the grooves running.

They have clearly tried to tidy them up cheap... But now make it pretty difficult and expensive to split and rectify... Each bolt is about £2.50 from bbs.

I would go back, you are well within your rights and if its a decent dealer they will pick this up no hassle, regardless if the fact you have driven it away.

That explains it.. the wheels arent leaking the rust, its coming from the coupe's tailgate :evil: :lol:

But in all seriousness keep us posted on how you get on.. at a minimum they should try and refurb them, if they cant contribute towards you getting them done elsewhere.
 
I've spoken to the dealership. They are reasonable guys and agree that the photos support what I have suggested. However, they would like an independent wheel specialist to have a look, confirm and suggest what's required to rectify the wheels. As already mentioned here, the wheels will require splitting to remove the trapped shot blast as they're truly wedged in there. The paint will need stripping to remove the painted shot blast and then obviously repainting.
I'm certain this will be what the wheel specialists will recommend. I'll pay them a visit tomorrow and let them speak to the dealership. Fingers crossed they'll cover or at least part cover the refurbishment costs.
What makes this difficult is the dealership is down Sheffield and I'm in Newcastle.

Yeah definitely should be better as I paid good money. They also said that they had no record of the wheels being refurbished under their ownership. I'll wait and see what they have to say tomorrow after speaking to the wheel refurbishment co before I cast judgement. They seemed like genuinely nice guys but I also don't want to be out of pocket. Already majorly stretched my budget for this car. They did also say that it doesn't look dangerous and won't affect the integrity of the wheel and is just cosmetic. That sounds like a get out of jail card to me.

I don't want to have to get to this point as I like the car but I can give it back if I'm still within my 14 days cooling off period right?
 
The way that Hadies wheels was exactly how my 108's had been finished off with the coating covering all the titanium bolts. Looked 'ok ish' when I was viewing the car but I was concentrating on other things and put them down as a winter refurb project.
It has taken me quite a while to clean the coating off the bolts and around the splines. Pain staking :cry:
Ready to bolt them up shortly just need a few spare bolts one definitely the other may resuscitate. Just a cheap job not the full works. Trying a different colour scheme before I go for the 'full monty' refurb..............

I'd say that's a pretty good job toe-side. I'd be happy with that! Also, I didn't realise the bolts were Ti. Exotic.
I'd probably be more accepting if this had happened months down the line or if I'd mistreated the wheels. But I've only filled the car up once and have had it 9 days. I paid 13k for the car it so the wheels should be in much better nick than this.
 
I would agree see what they come up with.
Review a few consumer sites and learn some buzz words and phrases to describe your position and what you expect from them. Good luck let us know how you get on :thumbsup:

Very shoddy work. I've just part ex'd my 108's for 19s but I'm glad to be rid of them to be honest. Even after the refurb I had bolt issues and had to heli-coil a wheel and then recently the paint was too thick on the rim and was up tight against the spoke which caused the laquer to crack. Hence why they have been part ex'd with the company I bought them from.


They are lovely wheels from factory, but not suitable for our weather conditions.
