108's refurb without splitting??

Has anyone got a photo of their 108's having being refurbed WITHOUT splitting them?

I've put a deposit on a car, but the wheels need doing desperately. Been quoted £53 a wheel to refurb locally, but that's without splitting them. I know they'll look better if their split, but I'm concerned I'll manage to snap some bolts and ruin my wheels if I do.

Suggestions/pics would be great

you could prob paint them without splitting them but you could not polish the lip as the star would get in the way.. you would have to be very hamfisted to snap one of the bolts. I am refurbing my own at the moment and they are a doddle to split.

Yeah I know what you mean, that's why I'm tempted to just have them re-furbed without splitting and keep them as clean as possible. I'm not fussed about having a polished rim etc., just fresh silver would be so much better

I split mine last week, it was easy, but I am having my rims sprayed silver as I the polished rims need to much maintenance, If you live anywhere need Kenilworth, Warwickshire I am happy to help with the splitting.

Did you take the tyres off before splitting?

Yes I took the tyres off before hand as it just seemed easier for the sprayer to do a decent job, but if the sprayers say you can leave the tyres on the it doesn't effect the splitting at all. Do you have spare wheels?

If you dont split - you run a massive risk when painting that the paint will join over the rim/star join... would look messy I reckon

All I did when I split mine was spray the bolts with wd40 then crack each one gently using a socket, then spin them out quickly using a drill, takes about 40 minutes for the lot. well worth doing for a decent finish.

I'm leaning towards that, I get it Sunday but can't insure it until a week on Tuesday (waiting for NCB) so that gives me a while to get them done 8)

Don't attempt to spray them without splitting. Anywhere closer than 3 metres they will look aweful, with paint in some places bridging the gaps, bolt heads sprayed in, etc. Corrosion will find those weak edges really easily.

Use a high quality tool and split them. Clean out the inner corrosion and get the whole lot sprayed.

I use and airgun as it avoids any tendency to rock a socket and strip the splines. reassemble by power drill on very low torque setting and torque each in a criss cross pattern.

Done about 30 to 40 rims now and never struggled with anything (other than rims brough to me previously damaged )

Thanks, I think I'll go for this. Will get down a tool shop and try find a decent M8 12 spline. Don't have access to an airgun .

I think your right, much as it's easier/safer to not split them I fear they'll look dog rough.

Do they need to be re-torqued up to a certain setting or just tight? Any loctite in there too? Need to have the tyres removed first too, be so much easier if the wheel refurb place would do them lol

Yes - much better split. I'd torque them to 20lb/ft and check at 100 and 500 miles. I'd recommend a breakable locktite, but have stopped using it myself due to the way I work with, split, rebuld, torque, my rims all the time.

You can deflate the tyres to take pressure off, split the rims and them take them to the refufbishers/tyre shop as they don't need the centres in to fit remove and fit tyres, only to balance them.

Also mark the sets of fronts and rears so they match up later as pairs.
