108's or 224's

Hi everyone,

Probably done to death but what would you do?!

I've been running 108's in summer and 224's with winter tyres. I know this is the completely the wrong way around but I got the 224's with winter tyres years ago and because the 108's are prone to corrosion i kept them on summer tyres.

Both need a proper refurb. The 108's have been done once, painted inner and outer, maybe 8 - 10 years ago but are showing signs of age. The 224's were battered when i got them and had a basic refurb but need work again.

I no longer need the winters as getting a sensible car so the winters will just be in the way. But what to do, keep 108's as OEM for non M coupe or move to the 224's. The two types are the best OEM alloys by far IMO.

What are they both worth (without tyres, no cracks, need refurb but not disaster)?

Full refurb cost these days?

Decisions, decisions!

+ 1 224`s

Refurb powder coat approx £ 400 for a decent one .

For me it’s keep the 108’s, yes they’re a pain and referb will be £100 or so more expensive, but they to form part of the look of a z4 and the idiosyncrasy, for me the 224’s have a whiff of just nicked off any old 3 series

Curious how your rims are getting beat up. Is it when new tires are installed or curb rash here and there? :)

The 224s were a disaster when i bought them. Must have been dragged along all the kerbs in the UK to be as bad as they where! Person before clearly could not park!

Both the 108s and 224s now just general years of wear. They are not beat up so to speak. Stones chips, water underneath etc just picks away at them. 108s imparticular more noticeable. I mainly drive country roads, seems to be more debris, tractors etc dragging mud/stones that chip away. Again over years of driving off kerb caught but nothing major.

No contest. 224's all year round.
Or get some 17" 103 daisies for cheap tyres/winter use too.

17" 103's on a Coupe......
Love my 108's but so many stories of refurbishments that are expensive and don't last so I'd go for 224's

I went with 224's - but four 8Jx18's instead of a staggered set. I posted here: https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=121524&start=45

(I need to change my Avatar :) )

Luckily we don't normally have long spells of bad weather in Austin with snow where we need anything other than summer tires. Keep my 19" CSL installed year round, although have the original rims freshly redone with tires, but have never installed them. :)

You never seen the fat sidewall tyre look on a coupe? Its a beautiful thing to behold. Spray the 103s matt black and enjoy some cheap tyre shopping. This one is jacked, but they are out there....

It really depends what you want OP.

My 2nd 3.0Si had clean 108s fitted but I knew they would need an expensive refurb at some point. So I bought a set of E89 Style 295s and sold my 108s while they were still in decent condition. The 295s still had 5 spokes so were just as easy to clean but were never going to cost as much to refurb as the 108s would have!

I paid just short of £300 to get the 224s for my current Coupe dipped and powder-coated. Your tired 224s may be worth a bit more than your 108s, even if only because they'd be cheaper to refurb.

Good luck whatever you decide.
