108s in need of a Refurb

Hi All,

I am selling some 108s that are in pretty bad need of a refurb.

I will put some pictures up so that you can see for yourselves. Knowing how handy people are on here though I know someone will be up to the challenge! No Buckles or cracks!

I have recently replaced these with 224s hence the reason for selling.

I am asking for £150.

Thanks all.

Andrew

I think that taking into account the amount of corrosion on the alloys that the price is a tad on the high side. A refurb will be anything from £250 upwards as they need splitting coupled with the fact that the bolts can be a bitch to remove.

There's a nice set on here which has been bumped to £350 complete with tyres http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=63081

Recently advertised refurbed ones that were available from Mr Wilks http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=63281

Way too high for a set of 108's in that condition. Nearer £150. As said need splitting and a full refurb.

As an aside how can you tell they are not buckled?
Member woollybear gets my rims then shows me how buckled they are when we spin them up.

Agree with cj & swiftly /£250 is too much for 108,s as a refurb project
£150 is max on a straight set of 4 needing the works .
Tyres ? sounds daft but this can add costs for removal & courier so not always a bonus having rubber on
I would make you an offer but right now i have 2 sets on the go & 1 set pending  .

Thats brilliant thanks everyone for the feedback. I thought they were prob on the expensive side.

I think I will have a go at restoring these myself.

Thanks again for the feedback.

P.S. CJ its a good point, I thought that if you had a buckled wheel you would feel it and these run perfectly. If you don't feel a buckled wheel and it isn't obvious when you drive then you are correct. These may well be buckled to buggery.

Great satisfaction to be had spliting £ restoring a set of 108,s but at the same time they can be an absolute nightmare so some tips for you mate /

Leave rimbolts overnight with penetrating oil http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FREEZE-SPRAY-QUICK-RELEASE-40-DEGREES-400ml-penetrating-oil-fluid-SGFS1-/190950379642?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item2c7587907a

Buy 4 of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Franklin-Tools-M8-Spline-12-Point-Socket-Bit-T4408-/261443598539?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item3cdf40b8cb/ use 1 for each wheel , much cheaper than stripping the head with a worn bit

Loosen bolts opposite each other on the wheel face as opposed to working round the clock

Get a "feel" for the point at which the bolt will round or sheer off / i find with the ones that are the tightest apply tightening pressure followed by untightening & if no success leave & go back after a few mins & repeat the process

Sure others will have their own insider tips so take them all on board

Hi

Not strictly on topic but could you tell me which brake discs you are running on? They look good!

Difficult to tell, especially on a rear rim. Often balancing counters some of the issues. Only real way to know is to spin them up on a machine and see what's going on.

Anyway - have a go at a DIY refurb if you have time. Done a few sets but they never last as long as a top pro job.

This is brilliant.

Mr Wilks - thanks so much for the advice, I have never tried this before so any advice is superb, thanks very much.

CJ - good advice as well thanks. I will spin them up and see what is going on.

I will keep you updated on the refurb. Not sure when I'll start. Maybe Wednesday.

GMANLAW - Thanks very much. I did the big brake conversion from a 330D (a lot of people on here have done it), very easy to do and takes the disc size on a 3.0i from 300mm to 320mm (or 325 can't remember). They look so much better and stop very well too. The discs are EBC Turbogroove and the pads are EBC yellowstuff mate.

Thanks again everyone

just seen you have an SI GMANLAW - if you have a 3.0 you already have the bigger discs (you probably know this already considering you only actually asked me what brand the discs were)

Oh my golly gosh.. Not seen a set of 108s in that condition, for a long time..

Ideally: They will need to be broken down into the 8 pieces; chemically stripped and then shot blasted, prior to powder coating etc..

If you do go ahead with the home refurb' - as CJ has already advised, - get them spun up on a wheel balancing machine, rotate them and see how good they are.. If your lucky, they will all be round, straight and true.. :?

Best of luck with the home refurb's and don't forget pic's for us, once they are done

Been phoning round today was thinking of buying a spare set of 108's changing the colour but the min refurb cost on split rims is £500 and honestly even if you pay £200 for a scrubbed up,set it doesn't seem worth it in my opinion
