108's Again !!!

I have used a clear silicon sealant to seal the gap on the inside between the main rim and the inserted section. It is at this joint that the peeling and subsequent corrosion starts - there will be a very small amount of movement between these parts as the wheels turn which causes minute fractures in the lacquer where water can ingress and start the deterioration process. When you wash the car be sure to dry the inner rim of the wheels as water will settle at the lowest point and again start the corrosion process. To date my wheels have stayed corrosion free.

I had thought about doing this, my only concern would be if they started to corrode what the dealer would then say. Although thinking about it, it is fairly easy to remove silicone I bought some stuff from screwfix recently which worked wonders in the shower.

The trouble with sealing anything externally on a car with stuff like silicon sealer is that what keeps stuff out can also seal it in. If you only seal one side, moisture, salt etc could get in somewhere and just sit there with the sealant keeping it in! I have used a spray type grease on the new wheel. It goes on like WD40 but dries like a thin grease. You could try waxoil I guess.

Been through this with dealer in York, as car was out of warranty was told BMW would not wear it, did a DIY refurb one at a time as i have a spare rim and they are great, highly polished bare alloy lip..

I have been told by BMW today, "not interested!" in the nicest possible service manager way

Any news easty ?

Sorry i havent been back to you guys, couldnt get to the dealership so rang them anyway and apparently its a "...computer says no !, whether the alloys have been kerbed damaged or not.........sorry guys.....

To be honest there is enough proof that these wheels don't last and can corrode very quickly that we should bombard BMW with Emails about it!!
I asked the service manager about what happens if I notice them corroding when the car is just out of warranty and he said they would be covered ONLY if I had taken out the extended warranty! Now chances are I will have another car by then, but I told him that I wanted it noted that if I find any more corrosion on any of the wheels while the car is in warranty, then I want a complete set of different model wheels as exchange!!

If anybody has been on the TT forum (i used to have one so was on it quite a bit) will know the issues of the dashpod problem. Its was a manufacturing fault which occured so many times it even made it to watchdog! .......Audi after sometime actually admitted it was a problem and decided to replace the part to those cars out of warranty...this all happened because enough people complanined about it......

Just an example of how sometimes manufacturers back down when enough people make a fuss. Now i am not a tight-a$$ by any means, and are not hoping for a replacement set of wheels because i am too tight to buy some, however its the principal !....

Let me know what you guys suggest, as i am all for bombarding BMW with emails etc ?

My friend works for BMW and told me that the 108 rims will be replaced by the wheel manufacture not BMW as long as there is no damage to the wheels and no previous repairs.

They normally send an inspector to check the wheels and give the OK to replace them then they get BMW to drill a hole in each will so they cannot be used again.

Personally i would imagine you would have to fight tooth and nail to get a set on an older car like mine.

im all for bombarding them,,
But to be fair I have kerb marks etc, but I was only looking for a contribution as a good gesture as my lacquer peels off, literally, when they fitted my new tyres, the couldnt put the wieghts on without taking off all the flakey lacquer to have something solid to stick too.

I was under the impression that BBS had gone bust sometime ago (that what somebody in the industry told me ?)
