108 Starspoke Rims

Question on the style 108 Starspoke rims, oft called 'split rims'.

in the 18" size were they only available for the Z4? Part numbers consist of 36116758194 / 5 being 8J front and 8.5J rear. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partxref.do?part=36116758194&showeur=on The one size front and rear seem to cover all the Zeds by engine size and the the E85/E86 coupe

I'm trying to find out if they came with a different part number associated with another Bimmer model, specifically in a different offset?

not an answer to your question as such. i have seen a bmw 1 series with them on.

for some reason i beleive that the wheels were z4 based.

http://felgenkatalog.auto-treff.com/?felge=1070

the above website lists most if not all every bmw wheel. offsets and reccomended tyre sizes.

happy hunting

He is looking for a solution for the rust problems and is going to make thousands in fixing all the existing ones :D

Good site pable - thanks
Seems to confirm ther e are just 2 sizes and 8 and a 8.5J and yes my belief was they are a Z4 exclusive wheel

OK so he's the bottom line. I purchased a set in great condition and have sold on my elipsoids. Came to fit today and the front left rubs. Went through the usual of assuming the fitter had put the rear on the front or the 8J with the rear tyre on as some through the wheel measurements showed it was not 'right'. Nope they were correct and the rims labelled up on the casting correctly. Odd...

So off the car and on the floor with them and some accurate measurements and the front left is basically an 8J stamping on the spoke, but the rim is the same width as an 81/2J if you follow. It also carries 12mm of more backspace but the face is the same (Well 12 mm is no surprise 1/2")

There are only 2 reasonable conclusions. BMW make a different backspaced 8J, which it now seems they do not and does not fit the measurements anyway, or oddly this is an 8J with an 81/2J 'rim' on it. I have to conclude that at some time prior to selling to me the rim was rebuilt incorrectly. Not for me to speculate until the seller contacts me to expalin a little more and I see their proposal, but a tricky situation to be in if I need to drive it.

Anyone with an unwanted 8J may have a buyer

I also bidded on these wheels from ebay, by the sounds of it i am glad i didnt win them, hope you get it sorted though!

What a pita! Sounds like a stumble at the finish line scenario! :headbang:

I put a bid in for those but no where near as high as yours. Looks like i will be refurbing my current set with the car out of action for a while, argh!

You and me both mate, i love the 108's but mine are starting to bubble in very small areas. I too would have to refurb them making the car out of action for a while.

If they have been refurbed and split then my money is also on them being put back together mixed up, easy done i would think if you have four rims in front of you split..then is there an 8 inch rim with an 8.5 cast centre in your bunch ????

This thread also prompt's the following train of thought, i have 108's and am always looking at something else, CSL's, BBS LM's, whatever, but hey, if i had any other rim would i aspire to 108's???, they are great rims why the hell do i want to swap them....

Well I purchased them because they were in excellent condition and that price worth having, but of course ebay is always a gamble and you'd never spot this except on the car. I'll not say to much until the seller contacts me as that is the fair and appropriate thing to do.

Good point plowy and if so then it's just a swap a pair of rims and their respective tyres to rebuild 2 'good wheels. The rear would not show up and I have not measured them both. I'll have to look when it dries up and I can get to them, which is Sunday earliest due to engagements Saturday.

when i bought mine i ended up with 4 8.5's

but all fit fine. i spaced the rears out to compliment the wider fronts

the fronts are running 225 40

first time i played around with taking the wheels off i didnt think they fitted...but then bmw leave things very tight (my original setup included) and it wasnt until i got the wheel seated and nuts on that it all fell into place

Not with these the 8.5 on the front inner lip of the rim is eating itself up on the suspension strut. I need to put the tape on them when I can get to the car to see if they have been rebuilt mismatched

I'm now an expert on the subject of 108's... , so here's an update.

After being dragged of away from home all day I managed to get back in time to get the Zed round to the boys at my tyre shop and up on the ramps to find out what exactly was going on. Things always become easier in the cold light of day and plowy had it.

In essence the 8 and 8.5 'star' part of the castings are identical it's simply a different width rim fastened on. 100% of the difference is offset so some measuring got all that sorted and confirmed, why I had 'lost' all inner clearance.

No time to rip the tyres back off and put them on the correct rim but as a get home the rear and front are switched and I don't need to drive it until Monday and then it's to the garage.

To be correct the rims will need rebuilding with the correct 'star', but that can be at rerurb time (which will be a long time away as they are perfect condition :) . The only legacy is the inner rim of one wheel has taken a grazing so I've lacquered it, but it's completely invisible.

The end result however is one that I'm really pleased with:

the strut impact zone (actualyy just the lower mark the rest is the tyre polishing the strut

Rim stamped 8J but grazed on inner lip as actually 8.5 !!!

and the end result. Need better light, but I think it suits the car

pablo - I can't see you can get 8.5's on the front (on stock struts). Push a tape through the wheel and see if the rear from inner lip to any common outer face is the same on all. I expect you will get 1/2" or 12mm difference.

Glad yopu got to the bottom of it.. you car does look well on 108's as does any Z.. :D two things to do now.

1. Eibach pro-kit springs, it sits a little high (wheel arch-wheel gap)

2. re-paint calipers black.. (notice the re-furbed rims, and i didn't split them :D )

Only my opinion of course..

cj10jeeper car looks so much better on 108s

Plowy how is the ride quality on your car compared to the standard M.Sport suspension ?

Slightly more harsh than OEM set up to start with but very quickly becomes the norm as with most things you get used to, now, brilliant, the car is superb on them..
