Got something very shiny back from the shop today and I like shiny things: :) :)

Hope it turns out well as I progress through some serious 2 pack lacquering and build process:

I kid you not I was thinking about this today when I was out running - surely chroming the rim would prevent corrosion!

Looks interesting, mine are starting to get the dreaded corrosion on the inners ,and i know a company who can do the chrome finish.More pics please as it progresses

Yeah - chrome is not what I'm looking for here. I want the warmth of polished and lacquered metal, not the harshness of chrome. If it makes any sense, it's the difference between woodgrain effect lamnate and polished real wood.

Trick here will be my DIY lacquering process and corrosion prevention measures. I have 1 litre and some good spray gear, so shoudl be able to get a nice build on it. Stars are coming off the existing rims

Ah, cool - I did wonder whether it could look too "bling".

A question on 108's - do you think if they were used only from spring to autumn the risk of corrosion would be sufficiently reduced? The reason I ask is that I'm thinking of using my current MV2 wheels as winter tyre rims, and then getting some 108's for summer tyres.

So I guess I mean - is it the salt and generally wetter conditions on the winter months that expedites the corrosion - or will it just happen anyway?

Wow they look superb, Take your time with the laquering, dont bugger that nice shine up.
What colour are the stars??

Ah - so generally favourable so far - good. Sorry about poor photos, but SLR or not, it's hard to photograph a concave mirror.

Stars are on the car and coming off to go on these and are flash chrome. Black paint base with wet paint chrome over and lacquered in. Perfect after 1 year of use, so keeping those.

Protection will be done with learnings to date. Inside will be sealed with clear underbody corrosion inhibitor and a silicone bead inner and outer joints. Still I make this up as I go along so we'll see. After 2 years of 108's and 3 sets I now understand them pretty well....

Don't panic me on the spraying Russ - I used to be a dab hand at spraying my entire cars, but out of practice these days

Sorry to slightly hijack your thread CJ but this is the first time I have seen the 108s split. When you advise putting the silicon bead around, do you mean that you should put silicon all over the part where the star bolts on to keep the two parts separate?

Looks good - pics when finnished please

Thanks Alan

I had seen that thread. Now that I can see what the rim looks like split, I was trying to clarify whether you would put two beads of silicon (one each side of the flat part of the star or one bead of silicon spread over the whole area where they join.

Looks like an interesting wee project.

Medium Dave, I think Phil is intending on putting a bead each side of the join, I think I would maybe be temped to cover the whole area, use a lot of silicon but would maybe ensure a better job. Not sure.

Indeed! And just when I was thinking the car was finished. Or maybe this is a wheel morphing competition with sammyz?

Out of interest, CJ, do you have the same flashed chrome finish on the back of the stars? Just wondering how much they will come into play with such a shiny finish. Looking good so far!

pvr - yep new compressor is earning its keep :) Had a new quality spray gun that I need to commission so this is an excuse.

Silicone bead - yet to decide, but I envisage a thin bead on each side after bolting together wiped back, so it's not visible. I don't see the point of doing it all over the inner surfaces as I'll never split the rims again and I'm wise enough to know in xx years I'll have to.

back and front of stars are all the same flash chrome. Won't be visible though.

Busy week ahead so project on hold
