I thought I'd give my impressions of my Z after the first 1259 miles. Hopefully this will give some context to folks considering a purchase of a used Z4. I’m an average driver in the sense that I will seldom push the limits of this car. I do not do X cross or track but I do like an open road with twists and turns and when possible shake the tires loose to feel a little adrenaline. My first impression was that the drive train was really well matched. My second impression was that the drivers layout is almost perfect, no fumbling or fussing trying to find or adjust any of the controls. My 3.0 is not fast but it’s quick and responsive and as I get more driving experience with it I’m even more comfortable with its capabilities. In short, the car will deliver over and above most drivers need. I like the style and the badge but honestly after driving the car for a while now they are the least important qualities. I had a road trip today covering several facilities that I needed to evaluate on Cape Cod. About a 250 mile trip in downpours, fog, and everything else spring throws at you here in New England. This included 2 trips through the infamous big dig and the SE expressway and back roads of the cape. Doing 85 in the rain and the car and tires don’t even flinch, DSC light flickering from time to time but no notice of instability, just a sense of a well designed machine doing what it was designed to do!
In Summary, there are plenty of fast cars to be had and even more practical cars, and certainly if you have the money, Exotics, but very few deliver the kind of driving performance and pride of ownership a Z can for relatively short money. The springs may break and the roof motor will die someday but honestly I’ll live with that as a small price to pay.
Cheers
