My insurance is up for renewal, and my broker Sterling was pushing agreed value insurance.

I always assumed it would be prohibitively expensive..in my case an extra £75 on a £300 policy for a heavily modified car.

As part of the agreed value policy they said they needed a list of all work done on the car.

When I asked 'what's all work?' they stated 'anything that was not mandated by maintenance or servicing and replaced on a like for like basis'

So last Sunday was a rainy afternoon and I went through what

Thats an impressive mods list. Outdone only by the impressively small addition to your premium, by the sounds of it.

I was pleasantly surprised on the premium..once you've touched 'suspension' then no matter how many mods you do to linkages, dampers, springs, ARBs etc etc it doesn't matter..

The only two things that caused my premium to go up was bigger turbos and interior led lights! (actually its just any and all interior mods)

Not much then

I knew I had 'twiddled' with it but it was SWMBO who asked 'so is there anything left to do?' that started me thinking... :tumbleweed:

It's odd why interior lighting and mods cause the premium to go up.

That's quite a list - makes mine seem virtually standard!

Yes strange..the conversation went “so any more modifications?’…”I put some led bulbs in the interior lights” “well that’s £35 for the bigger turbos and £5 for the interior lights”…”what about any other interior mods?” “Yes they are all covered now”……very weird…

Don't think there is any real logic in the insurance industry regarding 'changes or 'modifications' to cars TBH. They are not car people, they are 'risk' people. The risk is a 'perceived' one with mods IMO.

I wonder whether a lot of mods that are popular with the 'boy racer' brigade are 'red flagged' by insurers just because your average boy racer is a very high risk, so therefore the wider world pay a premium aswell?

I have heard that insurers really don't like wheel spacers.

I’m sure that correlation logic drives most of the loadings…fortunately I’m with a boutique broker ..one if their case studies revolved around a 200k car..so I suspect that client is not in the ‘yoof’ segment..

£335 for fully comp..agreed value with £400 excess providing it’s locked in a garage and does 7,500 miles for lots and lots of mods I think is quite reasonable…reflecting of course a steady driver with an impeccable past…

That's a very good price. I suspect a lot of it has to do with your location if you were down in London it might be somewhat more. My father's paying around £1000 for a Mazda 3 in London, although some of that probably has to do with his age.
