10 years on how has the ownership profile changed ?

10 years ago, I was hardly old enough to drive a car
I have never and doubt I ever would buy a brand new car. I plan on keeping my Z4 for as long as I can. These cars still look different and as most people you speak to, think they cost a lot more than they do, I doubt they will head down the chav route to much

My memorise of Zed don't make it back 10 year. But back in 2011, I got my, pretty much as new 2008 MR, half price. with 12k miles on the clock. Only to read in the logbook that the previous owner was none other than my Dentist. Small world.

I recall very few E89's back then. Though the 35i vs ///M debate was already well under way.

I also recall someone was awarded a can opener for their coupe, though that may just be forum folk law. Craig 3.2 would know. :wink:

Did you check the bodywork for any signs of filling?

A very interesting read. I bought mine with plans to make it a garage queen in the next year or so. I purposely bought a low miler 18 months ago so I could use it as a daily while I finishing paying it off. Spent a fortune modding it since I’ve had it though! 10 years ago I could barely afford to run a car never mind buy a sports car.

I like to think I’ve bought something unique that in 20 years time I’ll still be turning heads in as I do today.

2005 - 2008 Had a 2.5 SE 7,500 miles on the clock and got shot of it around 35,000.

Went to the dark side and got a white goods type vehicle from Audi. An S3.

Had a 1.2 Steptronic Corsa for about 4 years. Then in 2014 decided I'd be getting a Z4 3.0 SI Sport.

2014 until now
Spent 3 months looking for a 3.0 SI Sport with decent mileage and bought it 24th January 2015. 34k on the clock now around 55k. This one will not be sold unless I can justify and M. Even at that I'd garage the M and use the SI as a daily.

Bought my first Z4 (a 2004 3.0se E85) in 2005 with 7k miles for about 25k. Sold iit in 2010 with 91k on it for about £9k. It was used as my daily for the entire period.

In May 2009 BMW invited me to a launch event for the E89 where we drove E89 35i's around Bedfordshire. Decided then that, nice car as it undoubtedly was, it didn't float my boat.

So in 2010 I bought the Z4MC, with 13k miles. It was used as a daily for 18 months (maybe less) and has been a garage queen ever since (now on 43k). It is owned outright although I do use a work car allowance to finance new purchases. I would never consider PCP personally.

My daily currently is a Mini Countryman Cooper S All4 which I've owned for 2.5 years. I've been very pleased with it so far (now on 43k).

I bought mine as an ex-dealer MD's car, with 4,000 miles in 2007; I think I paid about £22k. It's a silver 57 3.0si, with upgraded speakers, upgraded leather, rear spoiler and Type 4 AC Schnitzer wheels.

I've added another 22,000 miles in 10 years - road-trips and sunny Sundays. Long since paid for, now my third car - BMW 535d Touring daily drive, and MK Indy Track car. If I win the lottery, I would exchange it for an F-Type 5 litre. Otherwise, its a keeper until the day I can no longer get in and out without a hoist! It still looks like a new car, turns heads and nobody can believe it is 11 years old.

Biggest change for me was that I was almost alone in modding the Z4, most being PCP, leased, or not considered cars to mod.

I cut the hole in the dashboard in 2006, think I was the first to fit a satnav :lol:

So, as that was pre-flimper, perhaps we should really be referring to the more basic cars as PVR-spec

I've only had one 3 and a half years, but also plan to keep it until I can't get on or out.

I have had a lot of decent cars over the years and have veered between using my head and then my heart to buy something impractical. We always had to have one biggish vehicle to tow the caravan and then whatever I fancied (within reason). Last year in my sensible phase I had a Skoda Roomster as a run around and then the itch started again so I started looking and in April found my 2005 2.2 Z4. It’s far from perfect but I have really enjoyed making some improvements and driving until late Autumn. Since then Ziva (my wife’s choice of name) has become a garage queen with her own little heater. For not a lot of money she has given me an enormous amount of pleasure and I can’t wait for the weather to improve. I still have a few jobs that need doing so will be approaching the usual suspects on the forum to get the work completed. The forum is a great resource for non-technical people like me. Thanks guys for all those who have provided help and advice.

According to today's GBP exchange rate my Z4 would have cost £67.529,41 back in 2004 (almost €77k it would have cost according to my 2004 price listing...)
This is what tax hell looks like.....
Obviously I didnt buy it new, I'll probably never spend that kind of money on a car....

Would've been in secondary school when they were new.
Owned mine for 5 years and put nearly 100k miles on it - now not being used daily as my situation has changed so expect to put far less miles on her now. Own mine outright though I did use a cheap low APR loan to help with the purchase

I didn't even want a z4. I just wanted a half cheap roadster like an s2k or a 2.8 Z3..

Ended up with this. Quite like it though. When the time comes to change it may go for an Alpina and push the boat out.

I had a Z3 2.8 before my Z4, night and day between them. Both feel extremely well built and 'solid' (also had a mk2 mx5), the Z3 felt a LOT older though and dare I say it more basic, especially with regards to the interior. I never felt the same enthusiasm to drive it as I do the Z4. When the Z4 is detailed I fine myself looking back at it when its parked up and thinking that it's a stunning looking car, dont think I ever did it with the Z3.

I bought mine nine years ago and I don’t think my profile changed significantly whilst my ///M became at first less valuable and then returned to more or less the price I paid for it. Of course, that doesn’t include the fortune I’ve spent on modifications.
Mine was a daily driver for a few years before that role was taken variously by a diesel 3 series, an S2000, an SLK (don’t ask) and now an RS4. All being well, mine will be spending a few weeks on a boat heading south soon for a new life in the sunshine.

Wow, I would imagine picking it up the 2nd time must have been almost as exciting as the first time!

I've never done that, but I did buy a 2 year old Capri Injection in 1984 then had to sell it after a year for the deposit on my first house.

I worked all the overtime offered, and 3 years later was able to buy another Capri Injection - unfinished business. :lol:

I hadn’t driven it for 8 years but was like meeting up with an old friend again! Amazing how the memories flood back. Looking forward to a suspension refresh to return it to its best. That engine....!
