I think the owner demographic has changed,but certainly not all I.T guys buying them,when new, PVR lol.
I bought my first z4,a 20month old, a 2005 3.0i msport in Black Sapphire, with some nice extras,sold for £36k to its first owner,and I bought it for £21k,early 2007.( A bargain,given book value then was £23-24k
It's first owner was a company owner,and had it as his daily driver.His company had went bust and he needed to sell.
When I got my first z,they were still a fairly rare sight,even though they had been out for about 3.5 years at the time.
Only one other (3.0,anyway) anywhere near me in early 2007, and the other owner was very chatty and chuffed to see another one besides his.
My window cleaner refused to believe it was mine,as he thought they were around £30k plus,even at nearly 2 years old,lol.
Moving onto an M in 2012, ironically I paid less for it than my 3.0i,as I bought it for under £17k,again a bit of a bargain at that time,as they were selling for around £18-20k,at just shy of 4years old,and a mere 21k miles on it.
The first owner was a female doctor,who specced it upto £49k Inc options,paying around £45/6k!! (And who had waited about 6months for delivery at the time).
Over the years,on here and at various meets, I have talked to and met many owners who have spent upto nearly £50k on brand new cars,be it an M or an E89 35is with lots of extras,to owners of the now sub £5k early cars.
That's what's great about this place,as the vast Majority are all decent folk.
One thing that has changed on the forum,imo,is the negative comments that people want to say have increased,so much so,that people can't even sell a car ,at any price,etc,without someone slating it!!
Sad but true.
And something that can be said of the internet/forums/social media in general,tbh.
That aside,it's great that this place is still doing okay after over 10years.
I personally hope it's still here in another 10years,and that the diversity of the owners keeps this place popular,and also gives plenty of us,myself Included,alot f enjoyable forum meets and the like. 
(And the keyboard warriors don't ruin it)
What's nice about on here,is that, regardless of whether you spend £5,10,15,20,30 or 40+ k, we all love our cars,and z4's in particular,and alot of us enjoy going out for drives together.
Something I know has meant people probably held onto their cars longer that they might have without this forum.
And spent more on them than they intended,lol.
I know I certainly did,as within the first year or so on here,I had changed the lights,added a BMW strut brace,bought winter wheels and had them customised to two tone silver/polished and graphite black centres on my 108s,for my winter wheels. Not to mention the extra storage,2nd first aid box under the seat,and the Eibach springs,updated bushes,etc etc.....to name but a few.
Now,my M has remained more or less as was,bar some minor improvements.
