10 years of iPhone

Ahh, the apple upgrade hole. I've had many a friend fall into that one, they never come out... They just keep upgrading.
Still the planet has endless resources. This can go on for ever :? Nobody gives a s**t about the planet anyway so why should anyone else is a mantra I hear echoing in consumer attitudes the world over.
I ask myself a simple question... Do I need it, or does what I have do the job I need it for? So far my 5s is still doing a great job. It's the first iphone I bought after my other android first edition galaxy phone stopped working. Personally I think the 5s was the last design that was cool looking. I can't tell an iphone from an android now.
I've still got an ipad 3. Had it from new and have used it daily since whenever it was released.
Most people I know don't use their computers or phones for anything special, just watching porn, antisocial media and talking bollocks to whoever will listen. Why upgrade for that?

Change and competition in the market is good for all. Keeps the big boys on their toes.

Look at Nokia and Blackberry... 10 years ago they were the big boys now neither exist!

Ive been an avid mac user (self confessed apple fan) for 12 years and now apple have given up on the Pro sector, ignored the mac pro there is nothing for the users that really make the content for the consumer products.

I am a graphic designer and photographer by trade working for a media company in Manchester as a graphic designer and photographer and I have my own photography business I run from home.

The company I work for has now switched back to windows which I was not looking forward to at all. I went kicking and screaming and tbh ive come out quite impressed. To begin with I had a huge amount of issues which is the reason I left windows in the first place! Dreaded blue screens, random crashes etc and when your working on huge documents and not used to saving them you loose hours of work.

After some tinkering the system became more stable and I have learned to love some of the features in windows 10 and dislike some of the features in Mac OS. But vice versa Mac OS does a lot of things windows doesn't and it does a lot of things much better. I still much prefer the mac ecosystem especially how stable the mac is, in the 12 years ive had macs I can remember only once or twice of a crash or loosing work and no worries at all, not saving every 10 mins which I do miss.

But apple sells the current 4 year old outdated trash can Mac Pro in a decent configuration for £4k and it cant have native 4k displays attached to it because of Thunderbolt standards. They have stripped all the functionality and upgradability a pro needs. Add another 2-3k for an external So I currently have a 2009 Mac pro which was originally a quad core and I have upgraded it to a 2011 firmware and a 6 core process and its still a great performing system but lacks the newest ports like thunderbolt, even USB3 cards don't play well. When the system sleeps the card disconnects the drive which will eventually reduce life of the external drives attached.

The iMac is a great machine but its thinness is its Achilles heel. It has good specifications and on paper is a very fast machine, add the gorgeous 5K screen and it should be a winner. Unfortunately if you are doing heavy graphics work the graphics card cant handle pushing all those pixels which means it works hard and gets hot and the FPS drops significantly. The problem with having such a thin design is they get even hotter and the machine suffers from thermal throttling which essentially means you pay all that money and the computer doesn't perform to its true capabilities, around 20-30% slower than it should. Add that to the shelf life of 2-3 years as nothing is upgradable not even ram now a days and from a business perspective doesn't make a good investment which is why the Mac Pros were most popular but the trash can is essentially the same design ethos everything is external not internal.

Anyway the point I was making is that I have just moved into my own property and wanted to make a media server and a back up server for my Mac Pro. I have 16tb of attached storage that my mac pro backs up (my images for my photography business) with another 4TB attached for the network to pick up for TV and Movies. The mac mini was my first choice but they have neglected it for about 3 years and it only has one drive in it now. So I ended up buying a HP Micro server... it was £180 and I got £60 cashback so £120!!!! insane value for a server grade fully functional computer.

It has 4x 3.5" drive bays which I populated with 4x 4tb drives, I used the DVD drive to put an 250gb SSD to keep everything running quickly. I attached a 4tb external drive via USB3 for my server to push across the house then hooked it all up with some power line adapters with CAT 7 cables so the whole thing works brilliantly...

Obviously this is out of the realms of apples product scope really but essentially a mac mini is a small server but 6x the price so that's where I went.

Now the parts for the current Mac Pro are much cheaper you can make a similarly specked PC for about £1500 they are consumer grade parts rather than server grade but it doesn't make such a huge difference. So I don't know where I will be in 5 years time... The new MacBook pro is a joke with a £500 price increase with the gimmicky touchbar, a battery that doesn't work and its no faster than the previous gen. It also failed to receiver a consumer rating which is pretty embarrassing. I think smaller sales means they increase the price to make up for the deficit. Spending £1600 on a base 13" laptop is insane...

Anyway rant over. Hopefully the competition might make Tim Cook wake up and realise if he ignores his pro customers that make the content for his run away consumer products people may start to ignore it and the market share will continue to fall.

I’m on a lowly Samsung Galaxy Ace4 – looking to upgrade to get a bigger screen now I’m messing about on Instagram

Good man for Avoiding Iphone. Me too. Have an S4 mini. perfect for my pocket. Same size as my Wallet, ie small. :wink: Still on PAYG cost around £20/year.

And the other far more important point. Where the heck do you find time to post on Instagram, I thought you were hard wired to the Z4 forum.

I've had amazing Apple service, second to none with the iphone.

Took daughters 3year old iphone 5 s to Apple store for battery test/change. They tested it to confirm battery was on its way out, I agreed to a battery change for £69. They took it around the back, then returned with phone to say that the battery was pitted and due to the volatile nature of these type of batteries, they were not allowed to touch them if they appeared damaged.

The assistant said that they could offer me a new iphone 5s. 'How much?' I asked. 'Same price as the battery swap, £69.'

The iphone was well past it's warranty, Apple were not obliged to do anything. They kept the old phone (wiped) and my daughter gets a brand new iphone for £69!

Worth mentioning actually.. on the subject of batteries;

If you have an iPhone 6S and your battery sucks.. i mean.. randomly cuts out at 20-40% remaining. It's a known common fault, apple has a repair procedure in place for free, you just go in and tell them, they'll either do it there and then or order in a battery for you and book a slot to drop it off for the afternoon to be repaired.

I am currently using an iPhone 6 tend to upgrade by buying secondhand from people wanting the latest version, also have an ipad so will probably continue with apple for convenience

I'm on my 3rd iPhone which is the 6 and it works for me just fine and I especially like the integration with my other Mac products which include an iMac and MacBook Pro. I will use my iPhone 6 until it stops working and at that time make a decision about my next phone which will likely be another iPhone.

Apple has very generous statutory warranties for faulty products, actually. A colleague had an old iPhone 4S and due to their own policy they were obliged to replace the device within six years of purchase. It's quite well hidden but it's something you aren't entitled to if you buy the device in the US, for example.

I believe they aren't as generous if you don't buy the device direct from Apple
