Hi folks,

I have an amber engine management light showing on my Z4 2011 and under acceleration she seems to stutter. The MOT is due in a few weeks and so my friend put his handheld fault reader on the car and it threw up code $07e8, does anyone know what this relates too and possible fixes or costs please?

Well I did some googling for you..............
All I can find is people saying if it starts with a dollar sign then you need to find someone with a better reader that will actually give a recognisable BMW Fault Code
[ref]colb[/ref] is in Newport and seems to be a dab hand at code readers etc.
Hopefully he'll see this and be able to help?

It’s a generic OBD code which usually is a MAF or other air/fuel sensor..

As was suggested you need a BMW specific decoder to get a better handle on it.

If you’re really lucky it may be a sensor that can be cleaned…usually it’s a new sensor …kerching..

Found this on a Google search
p2098 $07E8 Post catalyst fuel trim system too lean bank 2
p2272 $07E8 o2 sensor signal stuck lean bank 2 sensor 2
Probably best to rescan yours with a specific BMW code reader such as INPA or a Creator 310+ handheld scanner that will have a better explanation of the codes.
The code you have points to too much air in the exhaust so you either have an air leak in the vaccum system after the Maf or indeed a bad Marf sensor thats misreporting what air is passing by it. If that happens then the extra air seen in the exhaust is going to be seen as a mismatch by the main engine management and set the EML on the dash. I would expect the engine management to command the injectors to increase the level of fuel they are injecting to richen the mixture up, would be good to have a look at the fuel trims in live data to see if they are high which would confirm the diagnosis of an air leak or a bad Maf as the cause. A smoke test would reveal any hard to find leaks across the engine. Check all rubber intake boots for splits or holes, they are the common points that fail and cause this.

$07e8 is not actually a fault code. It is a "Menu ID" or a header used by generic OBDII readers to indicate that the engine control module (ECM/DME) is responding. It’s like the car saying "I'm here!", but it’s not telling us exactly what's wrong yet.

Generic handhelds often fail at reading deep BMW codes. Try to find someone with Carly, BimmerLink, or ISTA/D. These will give you a code like "29CF" (Misfire Cylinder 3), which is much more helpful.
