'07 Z4 Coupe overheating

Hi,

I was driving along the motorway on Saturday when the temp gauge started to flash Red.

I pulled over and got recovered home. The recovery guy mentioned that it could be the thermostat.

I tried to look yesterday, and could not even start to identify where the thermostat was...

Is it an easy bolt off and bolt on job? or is it better to get it to a garage?

Looking on line it seems very confusing where it actually is..

Thanks

Phil

What milage are you on? If the thermostat has packed in then it's probably time to replace the water pump too. Unfortunately this is an electronic unit and prone to failure at about 60k and above. Many on here have had theirs replaced, including mine. They're not cheap too which is also a bugger.

cars done about 45,000 miles. Waterpump and thermo sounds expensive, how much should something like this cost?

Check it still has coolant fluid and also oil and take it to the garage.Do not attempt to drive it far otherwise you may damage the engine.

The water pump and thermostat are around the £500 mark and that's just for parts. If ones gone its worth doing the other at the same time as the other won't be far behind. Its definitely a garage job as if I remember correctly the new pump has to be bleed using diagnostic equipment.

One way or another you need a proper diagnosis first though

I may be wrong, but I seem to recall seeing somewhere you can set the bleed sequence off just using the accelerator pedal. So if you're handy it may be possible to DIY.

ye people have swapped with just using axle stands

the bleed sequence is something along the lines off ignition off, heaters on full, fans lowest, then ignition on and hold accelerator fully for 10 secs.

theres vids on youtube

ideally you want car on charge whilst this is on

OEM spec pump (Pierburg) can be bought for around the £250 mark, Part No 7.02851.20.8 - It's not a particularly difficult job, access on the E85/6 is good once the plastic undertray is removed. That said check all the easy things first - Coolant loss due to a cracked expansion tank is a common BMW issue, look for tale tell signs of a coolant leak on the plastic tray under the engine.

I stand corrected, maybe the OP could DIY if they're handy with the spanners. Unfortunately though either way the parts are the most expensive bit on this job, not the labour.

tbh i`d just pay some one, even though im capable, if i had a pit or lift then yes but working under car in tight conditions isnt ideal

have a look on this thread for places and pump type

and here how to fit

Bit late to this thread, but what the OP describes sounds just like what my Ruby black one did when the water pump died!

That was at 9 years old and just short of 60K miles, but I think age is as much a factor as mileage. I believe OBD may log a fault for confirmation.

Hope you get it sorted without too much pain OP.
