07 Coupe

Hi,

Parted with a lot of money and collected my new (to me) coupe yesterday. Obviously pleased to get my hands on one but by the time I had driven the 8 miles home the BMW joy was wearing off. I could hear a rattle behind me like a loose nut or something. Read a few threads on here and stuck my hand through the wheels and sure enough could feel a lump of something clanking around inside the coil/spring - presume this means the spring is broken? Bit disappointed as its from a BMW dealer and only has 10k on the clock - it'll be covered by warranty but thats not the point is it?!
Apart from that its all good - glad I waited for one with xenons.
Its silver grey, red leather and 108s.
One other thing - how do I riase the volume on phone calls? Phone is paired fine and all the functions work ok but the caller is very faint through the speakers.

Cheers

When you take the car back, express your dissapointment and expect them to go over the whole car again - just in case there was anything else they missed. A crack spring is a very common issue and they should have noticed this like a house on fire

Bluetooth - couple of things here

1) the volume is controlled via the regular stereo volume control either by the knob or the buttons on the s/w
2) If volume is still LOW, then Is the volume on your phone turned up fully?

I find that its fine at low speeds, but hit and miss at higher speeds due to road noise

Good luck!

Jamie

Unless of course this happened after collection......!

07Coupe, I take it you did take it for a test drive before purchase and all was fine then?

welcome to the forum and congrats on your purchase.

Chance of having a broken spring on the way home from the dealer fairly remote, dealer probably missed it, which doesn't inspire much confidence at all

+1

Not only is a broken spring a massive oversight but a massive safety oversight at that. It is a common fault however and not the end of the world, but the situation leaves you with a LOT of leverage...if you want to of course...

I'd be inclined to start with "I have lost confidence in both the dealer and brand and want a full refund. I would hint that due to the safety aspect you intend to take the matter up with BMW UK Customer Services / Consumerdirect.gov.uk (trading standards)"

See what they counter offer with. I bet they will bend over backwards to keep your business.

Oh so quick to condemn – perhaps if the owner test drove the vehicle first and before purchase he would have noticed this surely. Easy issue for the dealer, ‘Oh yes sir but it was fully checked before we handed it over to you, and here’s a copy of the inspection report....must have happened since you took possession.’

So you hit them hard and state you have no confidence and will report the matter to BMW Customer Services etc – they dig their heels in a state they will await any response before carrying out repairs. Start gently and express your disappointment and request a quick resolution – loan car during rectification (it only takes about 45 mins to do) and perhaps a goodwill gesture of a free service at the appointed mileage. If this doesn’t achieve the desired result then you can start to rack it up.

If it's only a rattle then there might simply by a stone or something in there.

Don't go in accusing them of anything, or claiming it's a broken spring, because if it isn't the spring then you're going to look stupid.

Agree

Thanks for the advice - it is definately a broken spring, I can see it!
Of course I drove the car before I bought it but only on the token test drive. I did infact query the rattle and the dealer said it was probably the toolkit/locking wheel nut in the compartment under the boot. As I was buying from BMW I had no reason to be dubious or even check as I had 100% confidence that any issue would be checked out and rectified before the hand over. Clearly it was misplaced!
Taking the car in just the now, have already expressed a severe disappointment and will press for some kind of redress. Annoyingly, no one from the dealership wanted to call me back this morning despite four phone calls.
I shall let you know the out come.

Fair comment about letting them diagnose the fault first...

But I would make a point of the fact you queried it on the test drive and that they hadn't remedied it.

welcome - its unfortunate about the spring, but that should detract you from what a lovely car it still is!

The tool kit should be in the wallet so how could that rattle - stupid useless dealers.

Rattle in the coupe may NOT be the springs. Remember, face-lift cars had the spring rates changed and aren't as stiff. My dealer put some felt tape between the plastic finishing pieces and the metal hatch. Helped quite a bit, but after a very cold winter, I had a few rattles pop back up. May just need to tighten the screws a little.

Take it back in, have them re-inspect and if it is the spring, have them fix it. Do you have a "drop dead" time in the UK? Here in NC we don't but they're required by law to tell you that once you sign it's yours.

Just collected the car from a very red faced dealer with two new rear springs.
Hopefully I should be able to start enjoying the car now!
Didnt push very hard but seem to have come away with a snap in adapter for an iphone and/or key programming in way of a goodwill jesture.
The car was MOT'd on Thursday and apparently didnt have a broken spring then but did when I collected it on Tuesday. I think perhaps an employee has 'borrowed' the car for the easter weekend.
All good now though. Thanks for the help.

The Snap in for iPhone does not fit the original Factory Fit Bluetooth installation in the drop down arm .You need in addition a new Eject box that the snap in fits into
If not already sorted just a snap in is as useful as a chocolate teapot :?
