'03 e85 3.0l - Engine gets louder the wetter it gets

I have a '03 e85 3.0l. The engine gets louder the wetter it gets. There was very heavy rain the other day & the engine got unbearably loud to the point that it sounded like it had been straight piped or the engine was about to blow. The car was still driving fine but I was driving carefully so I can't really tell. I got home & started the car up later to see if it was fine which it was. The noise died down as it got drier towards the end of the journey but was still very loud. No engine warning lights have appeared, I'm sure that it is coming from the engine & not the exhaust as I checked another time this has happened. I have had the car for just over a year & have only noticed it since the new year but I didn't think much of it. The car does run absolutely fine when it is dry.

I have no idea where to start with this, I don't have a code reader & only have access to basic tools

Weird.
The only thing that springs to mind is whether you have checked the air intake to see;
if it actually has an air filter installed
if it's wet inside the air filter box

You describe it as sounding like it's been straight-piped but you claim its the engine getting louder. A bit of a conflicted description there, but check to see if you have any holes in the exhaust that you havent yet discovered. Start at the manifold and work backwards. You'll need to get underneath for a good inspection.

You know you really shouldn't use water to lubricate your blow up doll fella. They just end up squeaking like a rat with a sore arse.

Everyone knows u should only use babyoil or margarine.
