0 - 60 times

I have a 2.0 e89. The other day I thought I would check out the 0-60 acceleration times.

I download an app called g-tac for the iPhone and set about my experiment.

After trying all the various settings I.e. sport, sport plus etc the best 0-60 time I could get was 9.13 seconds!!

At first I thought the app might be iffy so I used my watch and it seemed about right.

Has anyone else tried this?

Another thing I noticed is when I am stationary the car will not rev past 3500. If the car is moving and I dip the clutch and rev it was rev as normal. Is this just my car?

The car is new with 2.5k on the clock.

Thoughts?

Nope I cant see that being right, best ask the dealer.....good luck

my old e89 2.0 did the same. If you revved it whilst stationary it wouldn't let you go above 3500rpm..

Not sure why? Something to do with start stop / emissions / general BMW safety feature at a guess??

My M3 only lets you rev it to 7k stationary when it red lines at 8400rpm, but I have never heard this before on a car proves you learn something new everyday, agree with JDM around the reasoning.

Yep, mini MINI is the same too. I've always used it as a built in launch control feature - something I very rarely put into action (foot flat down then sidestep the clutch) due to the wear on everything.

You'll also notice I expect that if you're rolling along at a few mph and drop the clutch you can rev to the rev limiter.

I also expect the engine revs rise very slightly as you pull your clutch up when in first and the car will throttle up a bit also, a form of anti stall.

I assume all of this is to prevent engine damage and make the cars easier to pull away.

my 2.0 is SIGNIFICANTLY faster than that...something is wrong! you should see sub 8 seconds.

The 3500 revs thing...mine too!

Mine does 0-60 much faster...it says so in the specs, and we all know the specs are accurate in real life!

Regarding the revving past 3500rpm, might it be because the Turbo needs fresh air flowing into it?

PS: That's just a wild stab in the dark.

Does the app use gps to work the 0-60? Very crude if that's the case. You'd be better off just getting a passenger to time you. EDIT - just noticed you used your watch, so there goes that theory!

An app that uses ODB2 (Torque?) might be able to do it properly.

Yep it's a gps app. It's free to download. It would be interesting to compare if someone else with a 2.0 and iPhone does the same 0-60 test to compare the results.

If the time you have recorded is accurate something is seriously wrong!
BMW quote 6.9 and although Ive not timed my s20i ( with 2.5k miles) its there or there abouts judging by my reasonably extensive ownwership of performance cars. Are you holding on to 2nd gear until you hit 60 - around 6500 revs?

If you take it to BMW and they give you the all clear yet you are still concerned, you could take it to a local garage with a rolling road who will carry out a power/torque test for around £40ish

good luck

Its more likely that your launch technique and road conditions are the cause rather than anything to do with the car. To get the times which manufacturers quote, you need very little sympathy for your car. Also, if your tyres are cold, or the road surface is anything less than perfect, then you will easily lose a couple of seconds.

Traction control reducing power, and a gear change half a second too late or early will also add time to your 0-60 sprint.

If your car feels fine then just enjoy it, 0-60 is pretty much irrelavent as there are so many variables.

Andrew.

a lot of cars have the rev limiter when at a standstill... it's there to protect the engine.

my old XKR had a limit of 3k revs.... it did pop and bang when you hit it though... much fun...
