Fuel Pump?

Hi all. Two months in and am loving the car, puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. As of the weekend I have noticed an irritating hum / whine coming from behind the seats. Very faint and can only be heard when radio is turned down. Is Only heard when car is one or being driven. Fuel pump going maybe? Anyone else having a similar problem? Warranty job?

Mines in sytner right now with this and I'm picking it up tomorrow with a new pump under warranty.

It does seem that there are a lot of these making a noise, even on the newer engines, I'm not that hopeful that a replacement pump will cure the noise!

Oh well, got the car back from the dealer yesterday and today it's making exactly the same noise with a new pump! Only happens on a full or near full tank

Unless its an issue to you, I'd live with it. The more it goes to the dealers, the worse it gets. Mine's had loads done and I wish I'd never complained about half of it.

Yes I agree, the dealer rang up for the after care 'are you happy with the service' type call and I said that the noise was still there, but that it seems like a design fault rather than a part fault and I'd live with it unless they felt the pressing need to take another look at it.

Have a 2009 30iS - (Increasingly) Intermittent Whine from Fuel Pump (and Gearbox)
Sytner checked out Fuel pump and found no problems but frequency of noise is increasing - They have agreed now to change the fuel pump after test drive with senior technician.
Also Gearbox noise - they had previously diagnosed as rear diff.... (?).... Same Senior tech (somewhat perplexed) has said that they need to change the gearbox.
New ones fitted today / tomorrow ... God bless the BMW extended warranty :D
BTW - Also had trace moisture in rear light cluster... they changed them both immediately as a known issue ... Hurray for warranty and a very good BMW dealer!

What annoys me after watching the i3 launch, all that technology and BMW can't get simple things to work correctly

The new pumps under warranty won't solve anything, quite a few people now including me have had this done and the noise is still there, and it's also there on newer models.

Mine happens when the tank is full so I imagine the weight of the tank is causing something to vibrate, the pump works perfectly. It just seems like a design fault.

Are these the same pumps used in any other bmw cars does anyone know? And if so are these noisy? If not then its not the pump but something relating to the design of the car.

I've not had this on the 35i... perhaps its engine/model specific?

Yes it wold be good to see which ones are affected, I know the 35 has both a high pressure and low pressure pump, and the other models don't have the high pressure pump (I think this is correct). Maybe the pump is under strain or something like that?

My friend has a 23i and says his doesn't make the noise (an 09 plate), a couple of people on here now have newer turbo engine cars but still making a noise.

Mine will make no noise at all on anything under half a tank of fuel, so perhaps those who don't hear any noise don't brim the tanks. Then again I'm sure I've read in here that some people only hear the noise when the tank is near empty?

What I find a bit odd is that there do seem to be quite a lot of these faults become apparent now, I don't recall noisy pumps being an ongoing issue unless I missed something?

Hi,

I have a E89 Z4 28i which I bought new in March 2013.

After about 1500 miles I had a problem with a noisy fuel pump which was replaced under warranty by the supplying dealer.
All seemed fine at first and then about three days later I had a further problem ....... basically, the car started making a different noise from the fuel pump and/or fuel tank.

As always, noises are difficult to describe but this sounded like fuel being squirted against the side of the fuel tank.
It only happened on the overrun - i.e. when you took your foot off the accelerator.

I went straight back to the dealer and took the service manager out for a quick drive to demonstrate the problem.
Within a quarter of a mile he said that he had come across it before and that I needed a new fuel tank!

Two weeks after that the car was back in the garage, new fuel tank fitted and has been fine ever since.

Loving the Z4 !

If it is the fuel pump then it must be an intermittent problem as mine is totally silent regardless of how much fuel is in the tank, March 12 build.

Does the pump whine or is it a high frequency pitch as it may be electrical as opposed to mechanical as had this problem on a Peugeot.

Tim.

I just picked up my new 20L Pure Traction on Thursday and I was only a couple of Ks from the dealer when I noticed an intermittent whine coming from [I think]the right rear of the car whilst stationary in traffic. The noise disappeared after a few minutes and I didn't hear it again until I did a cold start the next morning - again the noise disappeared after a couple of minutes possibly once the engine had warmed up.

Reading all the posts about this issue where changing out the fuel pump has not fixed the problem, could it be the hydraulic motor for the roof operation that is making the noise although the roof was in the closed position? Just a thought but I'll have the dealer check things out.

Update on my post above. Both the boss and I agree the sound appears to be coming from the right rear somewhere when listening inside the cabin. Couldn't hear it outside so opened the petrol filler cap and stuck my ear against it - nothing! Same story with the boot opened. I'm now wondering since it seems to be associated with a cold start, if the sound is actually coming from under the bonnet and just cabin acoustics making it appear coming from the right rear quarter. Any thoughts anyone?

You may have my problem which is a whine when cold which appears to emminate from the engines passenger side and slowly subsides as the car warms up and then 99.9% disappears when upto operating temperature. I've noticed the whine is worse in colder air temperatures and less so on a hot day when the engine is cold. Its definitely not the fuel pump as its coming from the engine bay. Mines done this since new and it went in twice, first visit the dealer changed the waistgate solenoid valve which didn't cure it, second time they said it was normal when compared to another 2.0l which did have a whine but less marked so I'm just living with it. Mine is quite loud at times and really just sounds rubbish until its warmed up, not helped with the exhaust resonance on initial start up and rattling engine which is apparently normal

I've done a fair bit of searching on the internet regarding N20 engine whine and its mentioned in various road tests attributed to the turbo spooling up however there are also reports with 328i X owners having this problem I'm experiencing to be told by dealers its normal and some X3 owners who have had the problem solved with a new turbo. Personally my take on it is the turbo bearings being out of tolerence when cold.

There is also another known noise either electrical/hum/whine which comes through the air vents when on the throttle and disappears when you take your foot off so it could be this as well, all Z4s seem to suffer this.

My 13 plated i18 has a clockwork whirr when cold from the rear (think lollipop stick in the back wheel of your Raleigh chopper) that could actually be a lollipop stick...

Thanks for that Tim. I'm in Thailand so the block temperature is probably around 28 C at 'cold' start but the whine seems to disappear once warmed up. It's not rev related and I cannot identify it with the bonnet up, only in the cabin. The car will be back in the dealers on Friday to get a wind deflector fitted [I have to wait until the window film tint cures before the roof can be lowered] so I'll have it checked then. May just have to live with it!

Cheers
John

Is it really that bad? I mean crikey I've had some noises ( and still do ) from mine but unless its really loud or annoying then I just get on... Does anyone have a video or recording?
