After getting some used wheels from Lukemace here It was very clear that they needed some TLC.

The wheels as they arrived:

Unwrapped:

Quite a bit of corrosion but nothing that will deflate our enthusiasm:

I exposed some of the painted over Aluminium to get a rough idea of the surface:

A word of caution for anyone attempting the bolt removal.

USE ONLY PROFFESIONAL tools. Failure to do so will screw up (excuse the pun) the bolts.

Since these wheels have seen their fair share of salt the bolt removal was NOT EASY at all.

Tools in question:

and mainly:

2 split:

3 split:

And finally the 4 of them:

Tomorrow paint removal and outer rim polishing.

Looking good.

I tried nitromors to strip the paint off my wheels.. Used a paint prepping drill attachment in the end.

Best of luck with your refurb task . I know its do-able as i split & painted a set last year . They were ok but in reality i was unimpressed with the standard of my finish so ebayed them  luckily i came out around £70 up but that doesn't cover my 20/25 hours spent
If i land another set i would go Pro next time

Yes they came out quite well.

Re stripping will use an automotive paint remover.

If I am not happy will sandblast them.

For the aluminium it should not be a problem to remove the corrosion.

For the sprayed parts will decide when I prep them whether to take them to a professional or do them myself.

So far so good.

I have done a number of wheels and I was always happy with the results.

The last set was a set of 17" S2000 wheels:

That's a lovely finish!! :D

How will you go about polishing the lip, do the stars separate too?
Two of mine need doing so some tips would be handy, only corrosion on the lip's the centre star's are both still perfect.

one thing... i just noticed.. you have removed your center stars at the same time... the stamp's on the back of them are different... so make sure they go back to the correct rim (8" and 8.5")

THATS A TOP TIP!!!

I did not notice that they were different.

Thanks a lot.

Karlos, if you have corrosion try to stop it asap.

It can only get worse.

Yes the stars seperate as in the pictures at the top.

We are talking about the Z4 108 rims right not the S2000 wheels?

Today got going on the second phase.

SO removal of paint. Done using paint remover, scraper and sander.

I also got cleaning the rears of the wheels, very stubborn brake dust, a combination of cleaning agents was used with mild results:

I prepared the stars with 220 wet and dry in some parts to remove corrosion and then 400.

Started sanding the rim:

This is an idea of the end result (still far away from perfection):

I gave up on paint stripper, it really isn't worth it. Eventually I have selected one of these to use http://www.screwfix.com/p/preparation-wheel-115mm/83915 followed by lots of work with wet and dry.

It's too cold for me to finish off my last wheel but will have top get a move on when the weather improves.

I have a Metabo sander.

Its a great machine.

I used various grades on it and so far its fine.

If you where to swing by the Oxford area i could stick the rims on a lathe and polish them up in time!!

You are so kind!

Thank you!

Unfortunately am not in Cambridge only my brother is there, as we are in Malta. :D

So it will be a tad difficult unless you want to send me the lathe :D

Thanks again I appreciate.

Most alloy wheel specialists use a DA sander. Be very careful with that pad from screw fix, it will take chunks out of the alloy very quickly, if u do it use it very very lightly.

Yes i use this and its a good tool for them
