Third wheel is really bad, so I'm taking one of these to it http://www.screwfix.com/p/preparation-wheel-115mm/83915 which is getting rid of the paint and the corroded ally. It's making a lot of dust though :(

Andi.

I used something similar, with a drill bit attachment... nitromors wouldnt touch the lacquer on my wheels as they appeared to be plastic.

Yes, I gave up on Nitromors as well.

I realise I was totally useless with getting back to you on your PM. Sorry. I have a spare "star" if needed also.

Since i am about to take my 108s for straightening refurbing and chroming i was wondering, Is it that easy for the bolts that connect the star with the main body to break when you unscrew them or they break because they need equipment we don't have at home? Should i seperate the wheels on my own and take them for refurbing and straightening seperated? Can you please provide me with an ebay listing of the exact same bolt that is used on our wheel? Thanks!

It's down to corrosion between the steel/titanium bolt and the alloy if the wheels have not been protected well enough. The bolts are not big enough to cope with the forces needed and generally break just below the head. The bolts use an M8 12 point spline head that is not very deep so when exerting a lot of force care must be taken not to strip the spline.

The tool is something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/M8-SPLINE...t=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item19c2ac2667 the bolts go for a few pounds each http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Titanium-...s_tyres_Trims_Car_Rims_ET&hash=item256eeefc5c.

Will WD40 do any good with the corrosion? Thanks for the answer! I will buy some bolts because i think i will have some issues...

Yes, I've soaked one of my wheels for a week and they all came out with a little effort.

Andi.

I sprayed all mine with wd40 for 10 mins and they all came undone... Needed some serious strength to crack them free though.

In case a bolt head breaks and the rest of the bolt stays inside the wheel is there a way to take it out? What are the chances for something like this to happen?

That's discussed earlier in this thread  So far I have 5 headless bolts from three wheels (60 bolts).

RJS-Z4"I smashed a bigger torx (not spline) bit in and that rounded off but got a tiny turn said:
I saw this before writing my previous reply and i pretty much understand what Rj is saying and doing but since i have no specific knowledge of these actions i would really appreciate if you could clarify some things for me.
1)T45 is the size of the torx bolt that Rj uses in order to get the broken part of the M5 bolt that is still inside the wheel?
2)If you force this torx bolt with a hammer inside the whole with the broken bolt won't it damage the bolt guides inside the hole?
3)What is a buzz gun?

Sorry for all the newbie questions all help is appreciated!

1. T45 is the size of the Torx drivehttp://www.screwfix.com/p/wera-bitorsion-torx-impact-driver-bit-set-10pc/85453?_requestid=421789. These can be forced into the splined head of the bolt on a 108. The bolts on the 108 are M7.
2. This is not the process for a broken head.
3. A buzz gun sounds like an electric impact driver.

Andi.

Thanks for clearing all of that up.

All that Andi has said is bang on the money. My process was for if bolts start rounding off, not if you snap the head off. (That's Andy's area of expertise) :D

Yeah i figured that out. I saw a couple of videos on how to unscrew a broken bolt and now back on track with what i have to do! Sorry if i gave you a headache and thx for the info! I will let you know how the refurbing goes.

Regards!

Finally!

They look great! Pictures when you get them on the car!

Couple of questions though, as I'm currently in the process of doing a set too:

After you had stripped the paint/corrosion with that prep wheel, what did you use to smooth it off? My thoughts are sanding by hand is going to be a pain!

Did you paint the basket or is it polished/lacquered?

Did you paint with rattle cans?

Cheers :)
