A broken spring... or something more sinister ?

OK, the top coil on driver's side is clearly broken, couldn't see that before. Sorry for a tardy reply, looks like you got it sorted. Something is off with the lower padding, could have torn, may need to be replaced with spring.

If you need to save money, you could just do the front springs, but all 4 is really the way to go. The alignment does sound expensive, but I'm too far removed from the UK market to truly say.

So I just got a quote for this work from H&C Motors in Maidstone - a BMW Specialist Indy...

£216 labour to fit four springs, incl. VAT

£192 to do a 4-wheel alignment, incl VAT

Any opinions ? I will be getting a couple more quotes of course... However the 4-wheel alignment looks pricey compared to other quotes I have seen on here :?

Ouch...

Few more quotes me thinks

What about warped discs? Had this happen on a few cars, slight warping is only noticeable at speed. Any vibration through the brake pedal?

Thanks bcworkz, not at all tardy

Adamski, from asking around the labour seems about right... It's the alignment that seems about £100 too much. Though someone did say expect about £100 a corner for the lot...

I should get another quote tomorrow, and will definitely phone around in the morning but I haven't got much time to sort it out given how much I drive the car. Is this the sort of thing that really should be done by a BMW Specialist, or could ATS Euromaster / Kwik Fit / A N Other do just as good a job ?

Thanks for the input so far guys :)

Let me know how you get on mate... My "to do" list in my signature is coming along nicely, my wheel refurb is expected by end of the month. After that, I'm taking the plunge for Eibachs.... would be good to know expected cost.

Will do

Of course, you can get Nosa to help you :D

The next thing that will happen, it being Friday the 13th and all, is that I will discover the springs won't fit my car

(checked the part number - they're the right ones... not making that mistake again...)

Okay, there's good news and bad news.

Good - the spring isn't broken, turns out that a rear spring that was replaced was fitted incorrectly, pushing the rear o/s up 15mm, causing a drop on the n/s front. Pic of the offending erroneous fitting :

rearoffsidespring.jpg

Bad - there are more ominous faults that need repaired...

I am still in shock at the bill, will post later when SWMBO is speaking to me again and I have recovered slightly. Needless to say my Eibach springs need to hide until the dust has settled

Right, calmed down a little, time for a quick update...

The car is at a local Indy in Maidstone run by ex-BMW techs, and they came recommended. When I thought it was a springs issue I phoned around and their prices seemed there or thereabouts - factoring in the hassle of travelling a long distance, I decided to go with them and took it in this morning...

As above, the drop in ride height on the front was being caused by an incorrectly fitted spring - folded the rubber spring pad up and forced out. Been fixed, apparently the car is completely level now

They then took it out for a drive and the brake judder is still there, coming from the n/s front. The mechanic also said that he's driven a lot of Z4s and mine feels very unstable at the front end. He appreciates that I might have simply put it down to the runflats, but it's not... They had a poke around and the following became apparent :

- The car has gone over something very hard in the past - no damage of significance, but I have known it's been repaired following an accident for a while so no surprise
- Apparently, however, the n/s control arm is bent slightly (probably, but not definitely, as a result of this accident), and as a result the compliance bushes have been out of kilter. The latter are now very worn and close to failure.
- The judder is being caused by the whole assembly flexing under braking loads and pulling the toe of the wheel inwards
- As a Brucey bonus this flexing has had an adverse affect on my front discs and pads, which are now 'shot' because of the wear patterns on them.

So today I have learnt a few things about buying a car - tbh I should have had it checked more thoroughly before buying, as this sort of thing would have shown up, if it was evident of course. Unfortunately I bought it more than 6 months ago, and in any case the selling dealer could argue that I caused the damage and the spring issue was Kwik Fit who fitted it. And of course the issues may just be one of those things that happen.

Deep breath... the costs :

Sorting the rear spring - £90
Control arm and compliance bush replacement - £360
Front discs and pads - £200

All of the above include labour, so £650 + VAT = £780

It needs done, I have decided to trust them, so it should be sorted tomorrow. They promise me that the car will feel totally different - given what they are telling me the problems are, I am assuming this will be the case ?

There is a silver lining - the car is due an Inspection 1 in 575 miles, so I asked them how much to do that at the same time... They quoted £180 incl parts and labour, excl VAT - so £216 total, which from looking on here is actually a really good price.

Still, I am going to be a grand out of pocket tomorrow evening - or my credit card will be :P - so I am now off to the Rugby Club for a committee meeting and a pint or two

I will look forward to all the comments telling me I'm a mug when I get back

 -glad you are getting it sorted mate-better to find out the way you have rather than finding out when you are out hooning with wee Bing  -should feel like a new car when done! (look forward to your update when work completed) :)

I had 4 wheel alignment done last week including castor and camber etc, £105 all in.
Place called Protyre, recommended to me by Autotech.

Oh ya f*cker, that's a bit of a wallet raping right there. At least it's getting you back to how it should be.

So, when are you fitting the Eibachs? :)

Thanks guys - tbh I expected everyone to be saying 'ya silly f*cker, you should've done x, y & z...', so I appreciate your comments & commiserations...

The first thing I'll do is take it for a mini-hoon tomorrow when it's done - if the car feels as improved as they say it will then I'll be happy, if not wealthy...

Turbokid, are they in the South East ? If so I may give them a call when I fit my Eibachs...

a11y, yeah, about them... I think I will have to tuck them away for a month or two and then sneak them on after bonus time... :ninja: :D Mrs Bing is 'resigned and accepting' right now, so I want to stay well away from anything that may increase her DEFCON status to 'Actively pi$$ed off and raging'. Might need to decorate a bathroom or living room first. However, the main thing is that I have them

No in Warwick but part of a chain, google should tell you more.
Your car will feel great after all the work, mine does and I only changed a bent rear tracking arm!

Well, I got the car back. Turns out that the control arm wasn't bent, just forced out of shape by the compliance bush issues (I really need to learn what all these things actually do... :P ). So the bill was £770 instead of a grand, which included an Inspection 1. Still a stinger, but always nice when it turns out to be less unpleasant than expected. Mrs Bing is less impressed, so I am lying low when it comes to talking about my car for a while...

And the results ? It now REALLY feels like a sports car that cost £36k+ when new. 80% of all the rattles, creaks and uneasiness that I put down to run flats and the fact it is a roadster are gone. Honestly, just like that. At low speeds it is so much smoother, and at high speed it is simply planted. I've only had it on local roads and the motorway so far as it has been raining all day here and A-road hooning would just be idiotic... However I am very sure that the next dry day I can get out for a drive will be a lot of fun

All in all - learnt a significant lesson I won't forget, I'm a bit more skint, however the car is now totally mechanically sound, I have (importantly) found a local Indy I can trust to do good work with a sensible approach (they could just have replaced that arm anyway...), and I am loving seeing 'Oil Service - 15,500' when I start her up. Oh, and I am a little bit more in love with my Z

...now I need to sort the oil leak in SWMBOs Honda  :D

Tell Mrs Bing the Oil leak is going to cost a cool grand to fix, plant the spare into an Eibach install and a wee surprise for Mrs Bing who will doubtless forget everything!

Glad it wasn't quite as painful as you expected. Looking through the papers that came with #69, just about every bill added up to about £700. It's like it's Sytner Sunningdale's favourite number!

Sounds like you'll be enjoying the weekend

"Just nipping down to the shops darling...." - 2 hrs later emerging with a big grin and a dirty car parked outside.

Hehe

Out of interest, in what way was the spring installation faulty? I suspect I may have the same problem but I'm not sure what I'm looking for specifically.

If you look at the "ball" at the top of the pic you can see a rubber ring that is pushed up between the it and the top of the spring on on one side - it's forced the car up by about 6-7mm on that side. It's not a great shot but you can see on the same side this has forced the whole rubber pad that the ring is a part of outwards. My Indy replaced the pad with a thicker one and seated it correctly. I suspect that as Kwik Fit did the job they bodged it and possibly used a pad that was not quite right for the fitting.
