Mapping is when you change the contents of one or more ‘tables’ or arrays in a ‘map’ that resides permanently ECU controlling the gearbox or engine..by changing specfic ‘cells’ you can alter depending which table boost, rate of boost change, fuel ratio, ignition timing etc..
On a modern ECU there are 100s of tables…
Since around 2020 BMW ‘locked’ most ECUs rendering it difficult to remap..
Hence why later cars rely on tuning boxes more so to get around this..
The ECU holds checksums for each table..by reading the checksum and comparing it to the factory checksum for each table in an instant BMW can spot whether an ECU has been ‘mapped’

I think the question is what do you want to do with the dongle. Besides BimmerCode you also have Bimmerlink.
I have both, and use BimmerLink on the road for example to set the exhaust flap all the time open. In that situation an ENET cable is a no go.
And since I'm using Android Auto, my phone is already conencted to the Wifi network of the car, so no go. That only allows me to use Bluetooth.
But when coding I no longer want to use Bluetooth, it's way to slow. Some modules take 60 seconds to read, and if you changed something it takes 60 seconds again. I wanted to change the color of my ambiant light (cyan + orange) and that module was not available for my dongle, seems because it's to big, and the developper doesn't allow it to code via bluetooth because the risk of something going wrong during a long-term write operation becomes too great.So I ordere the Autel ENET cable, it's less then 20 euros on Amazon, and seems that autel is a renomated brand in the car diagnostic world. You can even find ENET cables (they are yellow) on Amazon for 10-12€. But I heard some have bad solderings in teh ODB side or has the required resistor soldered on the wrong pins. Seems you can screw the connector open to check soldering. For that 7-8€ extra I took the Autel cable. But you will need then an addition adaptor to connect the etchernet connector to your phone. I have a USB C hub with ethernet port, so that was no problem.
