Buy a previously written off Z4?

Two things, you’ve posted you’re 24, when are you 25? Because it could make a big difference with a car like this.

Secondly, my daughter has always had me as a named driver and it brought the premium down by hundreds, except this year when she renewed with Admiral, they told her that they had started calculating differently this year and adding me on increased the cost significantly. It still lowered it with other insurers putting me on.

There’s also companies who don’t quote on comparison sites like Aviva and Direct Line. With Aviva you also get a 10% discount on any policy if you have an existing policy with them. They do a £1.99 per month life insurance policy that would qualify you for the 10% discount.

I use Quidco cash back site and for example, Today Aviva are offering £64 cash back to new policy holders. Most other insurers are on there, including the comparison sites, and cash back can vary daily between different providers

I've had a CAT C e46 and insurance was the same. I spoke to them at length at the time, irrespective of the CAT classification, the vehicle is supposed to be put back on the road, in a roadworthy manor. So the car is essentially the same whether CAT C or D (or the newer N and S).

As mentioned, very little is done for the "older" cars to be written off. Had a little bump in our old R50 Mini a few years ago. Bumper and bonnet damage. But to the insurance company, that's a brand new bumper (and accessories) and brand new bonnet, plus paint, plus labour = write off.

I turn 25 in December, which I believe means I'm no longer classified a young driver. Hoping that saves me a few £££ in the near future as you suggest! I've actually been with Aviva for over two years for my e87, but they flat out refuse to insure me on a Z4  Admittedly a young driver rolling around London in an ageing sports car probably doesn't sound too appealing to them. My cheapest quote is still from Admiral where adding another driver seems to push the price up rather than down for me.

Regarding the car itself I'm trying to get in touch with the previous owner via the link wrighty shared, as he would be able to shed some light on it's condition. Not been active since 2019 though so not getting my hopes up.

It may give you the option to email the PO rather than pm which will notify about your message through email rather than them seeing it on the forum.

Same as my daughter with Admiral. Now you say that about Aviva I recall something about 25 too for the Z4. Admiral are offering £28 cash back on Quidco for new policies just now so another small saving.

Thanks everyone, yes I've tried adding my parents but that actually pushes the price up for me?
When my lad added me to his insurance it went down. OR if he added my wife it also went down to the same figure.
But add BOTH of us and it went higher than just him on his own.
That happened with my daughter too, so I'm on her insurance but her mum isn't...

You'll have the option to email rather than just a PM, so unless he's changed his email address...

I can't seem to find the option to email, he's on a number of forums but none of them provide any contact info, just the option to PM. A real shame as it could be the difference between going to see the car and not.

Now there’s a funny thing, there no longer seems to be the option to email only PM. This must be a relatively new thing as I emailed someone on the forum through this method recently. I’ve just checked and it’s no longer an option including to myself and I definitely haven’t changed any settings

Hmmm indeed, it seems that is now the case. I wonder when that came in?

I suspect the letters G, D, P and R may feature in the answer.

I thought so myself but it doesn’t disclose their email address. It hides it under their username because the person I sent one too came back and asked me to check if the email address linked with the forum was their @hotmail or @gmail account and I couldn’t see it, only their username

I'm going to have a look at the car tomorrow and see for myself. This was the image the seller sent me showing the Cat C damage, doesn't look too bad to my untrained eye... All fixed now of course

I had my old Z4 written off a few years ago as I lost control in a round about and hit the curb badly. From photos you wouldn’t have known that anything was wrong with the car apart from a cracked rim. However, inspection showed axle damage and lots of warped bits under the car.
If you do consider the car seriously (and it seems you do) then I would definitely make sure to get a pre-purchase inspection, share the photos with the mechanic ahead of time and let him or her know ahead of time to look for any remaining damage related to that accident.

Thats damage on 2 panels plus door and silver, that would not have been cheap to repair, also does not include rim and anything underneath.

I am not certain I would be buying that one, bumper is one thing but all that would have been thousands to repair.

I agree it would have been expensive, but does that matter if I'm not paying for it? :P
I would have thought it would fail its MOT if it weren't fixed properly, even though its not as thorough as I once thought

When was the repair done, if it was recently they would have paid for a low cost job based on the value of the car?

It may fail an MOT but you never know.

There are a few on eBay for the £3 to £3.5k and some are only 2.0 or have higher miles but may better than a write off --- https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-Z4-3-0i-SE-Auto-2dr-Convertible-Petrol-Automatic/324543110802?hash=item4b9046de92:g:1VcAAOSwL9xgYCFq

It was written off in August 2016. It's done approx 10,000 miles since its repair and passed its latest mot last month.
For what I'm looking for (2.5, Auto, Grey) I can't find anything south of £4,000, which for me is too much when adding £330 road tax and £1,400 insurance. Otherwise I'd love to get the car your linked! Not sure if prices are creeping up or it's just slim pickings at the moment.

It is slim pickings right now as summer is approaching so there is also a premium to pay, that's strange as I posted two different cars and neither were blue.

Ah yes I've seen this one, although its untaxed and its mot has expired, so not sure how a test drive would be possible
