“Registering the battery”

I’ve just taken my Z4 into the local dealer for a check on the electrics after the last battery failed.

The advice I have got back is that the “battery needs to be registered and needs to be a genuine BMW battery to do so”.

Has anyone else come across this?

Smells like BS to me as I am being asked to replace a brand new Bosch AGM battery(the best I could buy for the car) over something I have never heard of before.

BMW's do have the facility to register the battery, but all it'll affect (and this won't affect you) is the start/stop functionality; cheaper batteries, which despite saying they're start/stop, won't necessarily work on the BMW. The car will run fine, just won't start/stop.

I've replaced batteries on my 123d and 320d, didn't register either, didn't have an issue.

Registration of the battery effects the charging algorithms from what I’ve read, you need an agm battery with bmw start/stop cars

This is bs, the battery (in an ideal world) should be registered but you certainly don’t need a Bmw sourced battery to do it

....but assuming you have an E85 / E86 (as thats the section you have posted in) then there are no battery registration requirements anyway !

Thanks folks. I’ll put the points to them tomorrow when I go back to pick it up.

I’ll see if they can register it, and if not ask Halfords etc. to do it.

FWIW my E85 Z4 has no stop start but I bought the best AGM battery recommended for it as I really don’t like waiting on the roadside (or worrying about my wife waiting).

I’m hoping I also took delivery on a brand new M135i x-drive today, and have had 2 motorbikes with them since 2017 may change their attitude...

Thanks, yes it is an E85 (2008 2.0)
That would certainly explain why Cotswold BMW have been unable to register it...

I had a 123d with stop/start before I discovered straight 6 petrols and that had an AGM battery that needed to be registered to the car - a new one cost me over £250 back in 2012! And the original didn't last 5 years. :(

That's one of reasons I'm sticking to older BMWs these days. :)

You should make sure they've changed the indicator fluid too.

As it's a 2.0 you have ask them if they've updated the firmware on the Flux Capacitor too. It's worth an extra 40bhp at least!
