Inspection 1 - £695

Douglas Park in Hamilton. Their initial quote was £740 which was reduced to £700 when a discount was asked for. They phoned me about 2 weeks later to see if I was taking them up on their quote and I said that they had been beaten hands down on price by their Hillinghton branch (which they had been) without quoting the price to them. 10 minutes later I got a further offer from Hamilton to service the car for £490 and it now sits at £450. Unbelievable but true, the car is booked in at Hamilton now and I will insist that the valve clearances are done.

Make sure they're done! I thankfully know the Master Tech at my dealer so he always looks after me. At my Insp 1, he gave me a sheet of paper he'd used int he workshop with all the clearence values written down. They do go out of tolerence, and so make sure it's done! Apparently my car cleared the workshop out of shims!

maybe we need a chart of what different dealers charged/quoted for different things... won't be popular with BMW am sure, but could be useful to save people ringing round so many dealers if there are some known fave's.

OK so today i was cold called by Douglas Park Hillington (Glasgow) as going by their records i am due my next service - Inspection I. Actually have a few k left on the in car readout but thought i would take the opportunity to get a price off them remembering this thread.
I asked how much the inspection I would be and he said between £280 and £310 !!! :o Now why the word 'between' was used i dont know, but the higher cost is still superb! Just to make sure i went on to ask costs for brake fluid change = £85.
I know he didnt get the price mixed up with the 1st oil service as i said this has been done and he confirmed.

Unfortunately i forgot to ask about the valve clearance check to make sure it is included.

I just cant believe it compared to some of the cost previously quoted ... Someone pinch me please

Is that the difference between "M" and "non-M" servicing costs?

Really, REALLY sounds like a non M service cost I'm afraid. As said before, most dealers used to charge £650-£900 for Insp 1 on an M. Cotswolds became known for a 'discounted' deal in order to nab M car business at £600 inc VAT, and some of us have price matched that successfully, especially while times are quiet. Sounds like dgm may have managed £450 (???) but £280-£310... just don't see it personally, that's the sort of cost for a 330. Let us know though...

They do this all the time - amazing considering they are trained service people. Surely this is on the wall somewhere? I was quoted £80 per disc for front brakes on my M3 when they needed doing.

Me: Are you sure?
Him: Yes sir.
Me: Are you REALLY sure? Because that's much cheaper than I expected.
Him: That's what is says here sir definitely.
Me: Ok great, but that sounds like a 330 disc to me?
Him: yes sir, they are the same discs.
Me: No, they are not.
Him: Oh sorry sir you are right, those are 330 discs. M3 discs are £165+VAT each.

I've got to agree with mikedav, there's no way that was the M service price you were quoted. Did you have a BMW previously with the same reg as your current car? They constantly bring my reg up on the system as an M3 for that reason. Failing that I'm sure you've been quoted the normal Z4 price.

I rang around a few dealers here are the prices for INSEPCTION 1- ICNLUDES VAT, PARTS AND LABOUR. i DIDNT ENQUIRE ABOUT VALVE CLEARANCE.
RYBROOK WORCS- 722.52(AI)
COTSWOLD CHELT- 728.94(AI)
SYTNER SOLIHULL- 626.53(AI).

Anybody know of a independant M servicing who are reliable. cheers

Depends where you are, but if you're anywhere near Braintree/Colchester/Sudbury, then I'd use Darjac Racing

Even the local BMW dealer in Colchester sends business his way - although that's mainly the older M cars that they can't be bothered/haven't got the experience to work on.

I trust him so much that I travel all the way from Liverpool to take mine there - assuming it's not something I can do myself (e.g. brake discs/pads)

I got quoted £450 for inspection 1 from Scothall Leeds. I picked up a leaflet for BMW M series over 5 years old with those prices on but was told they would do my z4 for that price too. Mentioned cold valve clearences before I even got chance to ask.

I'm based in west midlands and cant seem to find anyone who are cheaper. If i'm gonna save £200 coming to leeds i can get over to my mates place and get it done it would be worth the trip. The problem will be if they do weekends. I will give them a call and find out. cheers guys. If anyone else has got some advice of any other quotes welcome. cheers
