Correct way to Disconnect Battery

Hi All,

I've read a few previous threads from members mentioning they've had various issues after disconnecting the battery (windows Auto up function lost, Radio presets lost, etc).

Can anyone advise the correct way to disconnect the battery to avoid these issues? Should you turn the IGN off and wait 10/15 mins before disconnecting the battery (i.e. allowing all the control units to properly shutdown)?

Or do the faults have something to do with the amount of time you have the battery disconnected for? (i.e. If you leave the battery disconnected for more than an hour then the control units lose their memory)?

Cheers

My understanding is that if you have sat nav, then quickly disconecing and reconnecting can wreck it. So you should leave it disconnected at least five minutes. Other than that I'm not aware of any restrictions.

Assuming this is a serious question, earth first to disconnect and last to connect. Reason is if you did it the other way and disconnected positive first you may touch the metal work which is still connected to the earth post of the battery, BANG or at least one hell of a spark and possibly goodbye to all of your ECU's. You will always lose windows settings, radio settings if you disconnect the battery. No battery, no volatile memory. I could go into EPROMS and EEPROMS or flash memory but you don't want to know, trust me. :)

Yeh, you will lose window settings what ever you do. Not a biggy though, literally takes 30 secs to reset them.

Windows and clock settings are all I have ever lost. Pre-set radio stations have always remained.

See, I swear I've only once had to reset my windows, and the battery has been disconnected a lot more often that that! Clock is the only thing that's been constant with needing to be reset...

Only disconecing mine once. Windows didn't need resetting. Only takes a few seconds to reset any how so no worries there. :D
