Selling privately and car tax

I have sold the X5 to a friend, with a sort of agreed date at the end of this month.

To avoid the double paying of roadtax, should I declare it sold / sorned or whatever on the 31st even if I hand over the car a few days earlier?

Declare it the 1st of the following month . if its someone you know or trust then i don't see the issue , ive done it a few times , its a system that clearly needs addressing & has done from day 1 , its pure & simple robbery with no legitimate reason .

If you do that I think your friend will end up paying for the whole month even if it’s only a couple of days away from the end.
How would you get the car to your friends after you sorn it?

If I declare it the first of April, does that not mean that I have to pay the full month?

Yes - I trust the person, have known him for 20 years.

If I hand over on say the 29th and don't do anything about the tax until the 31st - evening, would that not work?

You would need to SORN the car a few days before the month end in order to save the following month being your liability

In other words, there is no legal way of selling privately whereby neither party double pays (unless the seller leaves the car for two days on the drive). Strange ways they work.

I think you get on line to DVLA, transfer the car over to him on 29th, he does the same and taxes it in his name for next month and pays for his tax. You then get sent a tax rebate. He then drives it away first of next month. You don't even send reg docs off or anything any more, but destroy the one you have once you have transferred it.

Takes about 10 minutes and is very easy. The DVLA website also leads you through it.

The government makes the rules and always stacks the odds in their favour - heads they win, tails you lose... :x

But that means your buyer pays a whole months tax for a couple of days remaining of the month?

How will PVR get a rebate if he transfers the car on the 29th :? & if his buyer takes the car ob from the 29th as i understand the system he will be charged VED from the start of that month not the 1st of the following month

You can tax it from the 1st next month. So he drives it away on the 1st. The tax rebate applies for the remaining tax.

The one thing you can be sure in life is death and taxes. If you want to pick it up on the 29th, do it. Move on. Its £25.

I got caught out selling my si, it was the last day of the month & I agreed to give the buyer a couple of hours to drive home before I declared it sold.
When I attempted to do this on line at 7pm I found out it was to late, I then copped loosing the whole of the next months tax for the sake of a couple of hours

What you mean is the tax rebate applies for any complete & unused months , not what PVR is wanting to know .
To reiterate he asked how he can exchange vehicles mid month without the need for both parties to pay road tax for that month

I think pvr needs to drive it round his mates near the end of the month where it will sit unused until the new owner taxes it from the 1st :?

It's easily done IF you trust the buyer. All I do is do the change of ownership online on the last day of the month, you can only do this 7am - 7pm at the website https://www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle

This then cancels the tax and also does the change of keeper, so no need to send the V5C off, I just then liaise with new owner, who taxes the car online the following morning using the new keeper slip.

They then receive a new V5C in their name a week or so later.

I tried that & stupidly assumed as it was all on line that anytime up to midnight would suffice...

All useful stuff guys, thanks. Hopefully it works on a weekend as well, especially as it is Easter

+1 all this to save £25

Don't do it on line (unless you are now obliged to do so). I bought a car towards the end of the month and the vendor was a little tardy sending off the paper V5 such that the road tax was not cancelled until the end of the month. I taxed it only from the beginning of the next month.
The car was taxed continuously, so did not ping ANPR cameras, he had all of the remaining whole months refunded and I paid only from the start of the next whole month.
